But the post I quoted said there were NO other big female pop artists at the time. Mariah wasn't on Madonna's level, but she was still pretty big. Janet was up there too. Even Paula Abdul made her mark.

Exactly! Best example is the front-loading of BTW. High sales that ended quickly. Even Katy's tribute to debauchery and fifth single, LFN, outsold it.

Katy isn't generic or basic, if anything she reminds me more of "pop" than the rest of the pop girls, PRISM reminds me of so many eras of music and it's evolution, it's just that the feel of the albums doesn't exceed an expectation, but the individual delivery does.
Teenage Dream was POP perfection but some songs were a bit "nnnnn @ this" even her videography [minus DH] is so good too, very creative.
I don't really know for Selena other than that NANANANANANANA song, but her album was very basic. It didn't have a vibe or a feel other than a basic pop beat, even the lack of vocals made everything skippable, but I liked the NANANAN video.
To me it's not because Katy, Miley, Selena ARE basic, it's that some of their material and work is basic in comparison to their capabilities. They are talented artists but are reducing themselves to sell to the masses.

but Katy used an androgynous woman in her UNCONDITIONALLY video for a reason, i'm sure she does alot more for LGBT society than alot of people.

Madonna was always the bigger star.
Madonna started out in the 80s though, and majority of her impact was from that period. Her rule over that period was enough to survive her throughout the 90s despite not having the success that she had in the 80s.

What? she outsold her in every major (and minor) market in the 90s. by a very large margin. in the US alone Mariah spent over 1 year of the 90s at no1. She basically had no competitors that decade except for Celine for the last 2-3 years. Madonna was left for dust that decade after Immaculate until ROL came out.
It uses elements of power pop, glam rock, arena rock and alternative pop.
