Yes, currently, R&B as a whole is trash... maybe even the worst it's ever been.

Well, it's not currently the best, but R&B is actually not that bad, right now, either.

So you need music to be at the top of the charts to like it. Okay.

Also, what makes songs like 'What's My Name?' and 'Rude Boy' R&B, but 'Diamonds' pop? I am completely lost as to what R&B is at this point. Whatever, lemme change my stance on what I said earlier.
I do not like most 'slow' R&B songs. I was not aware upbeat R&B existed, but I guess it does. 'Yeah!' is great, and apparently that's R&B.
If anyone would care to help an ignorant person out, it would be much appreciated.

I don't really know how to explain this but long story short, like Pop, R&B has many different faces and facets to its personality. R&B wasn't created in the 90s or the 80s. It's been a lifelong genre that has evolved and is still evolving into different territories and sounds. Up-beat R&B has always existed, mid-tempo, balladry, R&B can be anything you want it to be, just like Pop music. R&B doesn't necessarily need to have an urban tone to be R&B. It's very difficult to explain how to point out if a song is specifically R&B,it isn't as frequently "in your face" as Pop usually is (but it can be), but it's ok to want to keep learning and the fact that you had the balls to ask, instead of these lame people on this thread just jumping on the "it's absolute trash" bandwagon because they know nothing about it, says a lot about your character. Just research. Go on youtube. Check iTunes! R&B comes in many shapes and sizes. Check out the songs people have posted on this thread. And enjoy

Well DC's survivor album was their most Pop sounding album, but still lol.
R&B comes in many different forms.

No, I said I didn't know upbeat R&B existed. Wouldn't that be different?

No. Elle Varner, Marsha Ambrosius, and Janelle Monae aren't trash.

The question is who? Frank and Miguel are quite dynamic. My money is still on Usher. He has the most potential to turn things around.
|
Usher plays it safe all the time. He isn't going to be helpful, in the least.

|
You don't need to have a powerhouse voice, but you do need to have quality and character. Ke$ha's voice has character. Britney Spears' voice has character. Artists like Aaliyah or Kylie Minogue or Cassie, for instance, don't have much of a voice, but their voices are very honest, pure and recognizable. Sevyn Streeter possesses none of these qualities. Her voice is bland and lifeless with no interesting qualities whatsoever, but on top of that, her music is embarrassingly mediocre.
Sevyn Streeter one of the reasons why R&B is in the tragic state it's in.

BTW R&B didn't become so urban influenced until the 90s with the New Jack Swing movement.

Thank you for actually trying to help, rather than just bolding a part of my statement and shading me. I thought people would be more understanding if I admitted I didn't know much of the genre and was willing to learn, but guess not. >.<

Some of these other people don't seem to have all that cute of a grasp on what's R&B though, either. There's been debates on what type of music Drake makes and what genre Pharell's 'Happy' is. At least I can admit I don't know it all that well.

No, it's a very valid point that you refuse to properly address. It seems that every time an artist starts to get massive success out of nowhere, you start to make these threads to try and discredit the success of said artists. "Is she a fad?", "Is she ruining said genre?", "Is she a one-hit wonder?" as if you hate when they get sudden acclaim and public love.
How do you suddenly have a problem with something that has been happening for years? It doesn't make much sense at all, and it makes your point - more often than not - seem pretty moot. Is this about the state of R&B, or the fact that you hate to see Pharrell succeeding or getting unexpected love from the public? I think it's the latter because "Happy" isn't really all that "R&B".

Yeah, don't pay them any mind, they just like being mean lol. But yeah check out Dawn Richard! Love her. I like to label her as "Epic R&B" lol her R&B is very dreamy and progressive. She has a few pop/dance tracks too like "Riot" and "Faith." Check her out!

I heard her demo for Zendaya's 'Fireflies' (or is it not a demo, but a song she was originally going to use herself, but sold?), and I'm not even sure if that's R&B. It's really beautiful, but I haven't really tried listening to her outside of that.

I'd really just like to be able to tell when a song is R&B, because I am just as confused as I was yesterday as what qualifies a song as R&B.

Awwwww. Well since you're fairly "new" at this it'll take awhile to understand.
Maybe me and some of the girls can make a short list of R&B bops throughout the decades for you, so you can kind of see the evolution of the sounds of R&B.
To make it easier, I say start from the Motown era and start your way up through the decades, and stay heavily during the 90s where R&B was at it's prime. R&B getting close to the millenium and throughout the early 00s were heavily influenced by Hip Hop. This could be seen by many R&B/Hip-Hop collaborations from Beyonce, J.Lo, Ashanti, etc., and even Rap artists. But we are talking mainstream here.
There are many artists bts, especially many R&B/Soul artists, and there are many artists who have placed their mark with R&B classics, on the charts or not, and have left but are still respected and heard.
