I care because I like R&B. And dated, reductive R&B artists are damaging to the R&B genre,
especially when that dated, reductive R&B tops charts, like "Happy." And yes, I'm
grateful for an artist like Ke$ha to listen to, until R&B can get back on track.
...Vin
Ke$ha is damaging pop music, or the public's opinion of pop music (which is that it's nothing more than uninspired drivel forced on people for commercial gain and has very little substance) and you still love her. Why is it such a problem now that an "R&B song" with the same qualities of a Ke$ha song garners success? The same people buying "Happy" are the same people who bought that Pitbull/Ke$ha song, not R&B fans.
"Happy" topping the charts isn't any different than "Timber" topping the charts some weeks ago. Stop being tasteless, biased, nostalgic and lazy and realize there are other artists out there who might just be making the music you're hoping would top the charts.
Well there's everyone you mentioned in the OP, and most importantly there's Janelle Monae, but besides that there isn't really any good new R&B artists I can think of.
I know this is going to make me sound completely ignorant, but I did not even realize 'Happy' was R&B. These topics always make me confused as to what's pop and what's R&B.
Also, what makes songs like 'What's My Name?' and 'Rude Boy' R&B, but 'Diamonds' pop? I am completely lost as to what R&B is at this point. Whatever, lemme change my stance on what I said earlier.
I do not like most 'slow' R&B songs. I was not aware upbeat R&B existed, but I guess it does. 'Yeah!' is great, and apparently that's R&B.
If anyone would care to help an ignorant person out, it would be much appreciated.

What do you call Destiny's Child "Lose My Breath"? Ciara's "Goodies" & "Oh"? Mya's "Case Of The Ex"? Chris Brown's "Run It"? X-Tina Milian's "Dip It Low"? Usher's "Yeah"? Taio Cruz "Like A Star", etc.?
I wasn't, though. I always assumed that the slower songs like Waterfalls was R&B, and then more upbeat songs like Survivor was a derivation of pop. Guess I know now.

Did you think all upbeat R&B songs were classified as a "pop music"?

Hip-Hop? Grl..
Bolded I thought was pop.
Yeah! I thought was part of the early 2000's evolution of dance in mainstream.
