This is something interesting and kind of disburbing. I have no problem with women becoming pop/rock stars, but it seems like more and more of the top selling music these days is dominated by females. I know male stars exist, but frankly, most of them are boring, examples being Jason Defulo, B.O.B, Jay Sean, and even generic rap stars like Tyga and Big Sean.
I come off biased perhaps because I'm into aggressive hard rock and pop music with a pounding beat. But when I turn on the radio, all I hear anymore is poppy songs with safe vocals and electro-pop breakdowns. Is there any mainstream appeal for masculine music anymore, or is rock music in general being slowly phased out? It seems like nobody wants to hear rock anymore, even the kind that incorporates electro-pop elements into it, which I find kind of cool.
We need another male star like Marilyn Manson. Not as demonic, but a guy who can push boundries and not confine himself to traditional male gender roles. He was practically the Lady GaGa of rock during the late 90's and early 00's, and we need another dude like that again.
I think what's making most male stars boring these days is that a majority of them use autotune, they all wear plain clothes, suits and ties, and frankly, most in the pop genre sing generic love songs, like Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber. There's nothing interesting or controversial about them, and their music isn't really exciting, although I do like Bruno's album.

I agree with this post whole-heartedly. I think this is because of the western world's machismo culture and general misogyny. With homosexuality becoming a hot topic in the media and everyday life, straight guys are more desperate than ever to prove how totally not gay they are and so they're afraid to be even a little bit progressive with their fashion and art. And with good reason - the general public puts men on blast for not conforming to every archaic social construct from decades ago. It's really a shame, men are given almost no freedom of expression compared to women. Thanks to feminism, women can now enjoy all the social luxuries of both sexes without being stigmatized for it while we still impose the same restricting stereotypes from the 1960s on men.

The closest person to this unconventional norm you suggested is probably Jeffree Star. He was just signed to Akon's record label KonLive under Interscope, and his new single "Prom Night!" sounds like a smash. It's already gaining commercial airplay in Canada and debuts in the U.S. on March 8. I don't know if all people are ever willing to accept someone who subverts gender roles to the extreme like he does, but he is certainly different enough to gain some credible attention. Not only that, but he's built up a large online fanbase throughout the years. Now that he's making his mainstream debut, it will be interesting to see where it takes him.
|
But Jeffree Star is totally not the kind of artist that will help alleviate the oppressive stereotyping of males or open peoples' minds. All he's going to do (if he gets significant fame) is reaffirm all the stereotypes that ignorant people have of gays/transgender people and make society even more homophobic. I'm not against him becoming a successful pop star, but he's not the one that's going to change things. He's too extreme to change anyone's mind about gender roles.

You're right. Though I think that's a bit sad because I don't see a difference between males and females doing it.
Anyway no one refuted my point about Kanye and Jay so I'm going to assume I'm right that they are the only good male pop stars.

He's recently been in the studio with RedOne and Akon, so chances are he may actually surprise some people. He's now under the Universal Music Group branch.

If someone like Adam is "too flamboyant" Jeffree Star has zero chance.
The fact that his music is awful doesn't help, either.

There's more attention on Female Pop stars than male stars.
The only male pop stars I can think of (that have that much impact as Female pop stars) are Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber & Usher....and you might wanna throw in Maroon 5 (Moves Like Jagger is BEYOND pop)

I think it has a lot to do with being scared to be "out there" without their sexuality being challenged.
Half the stuff Michael Jackson, Prince and the other gorls use to do, wouldn't dare be touched today.
Also, the record label is helping kill music. They're so obsessed with image that they aren't signing the true talented artist.

I still don't understand why Justin Timberlake stopped making music. I mean how huge would he be right now if he had kept going?

Adam really screwed himself with that awful AMA performance in 2009. I still don't think he's recovered from that.
I can only imagine how different his career would be if he released Whataya Want From Me as his first single.

This is the thing with America's outtake on pop music. People can't take the controversy, but when an artist plays it "safe" they are deemed as boring or selling out. You can be different and get shunned, or you can do the typical and be forgotten. It's way too hard for artists themselves and record labels to know where exactly they want to be. Where is the middle-ground?

yeah but there is still time his record company needs to get their **** together and book him shows to perform and promote him. His last performance was mind-blowing plus he needs good music to showcase his voice and bring out his real personality into his music.
His got so much star potential and talent, he reminds me of prince

Exactly.
Adam messed up his career in the name of 'pushing boundaries,' and i don't see any other male star who's willing to put their careers in a similar situation, just for the sake of it.

That usually happens, sadly.
Fergie too, for example.
Have HUGE success, and just stop.

Well, Fergie didn't just stop. She went back to her group and released two more albums with them.

And now that BEP is on hiatus, she can go back to recording her second solo album.

I agree with everything A Muse said. I wish straight guys could get away with more without people questioning their sexuality.
I'm straight, and I'm currently learning guitar, and I'd like to push boundries with my music instead of just being an average rock band. I feel that sometimes a cool image can mesh well with the music. I'd also like to incorporate elements of electro-pop and industrial music as well.
