Lack of Male Rock/Pop Stars
This is something interesting and kind of disburbing. I have no problem with women becoming pop/rock stars, but it seems like more and more of the top selling music these days is dominated by females. I know male stars exist, but frankly, most of them are boring, examples being Jason Defulo, B.O.B, Jay Sean, and even generic rap stars like Tyga and Big Sean.
I come off biased perhaps because I'm into aggressive hard rock and pop music with a pounding beat. But when I turn on the radio, all I hear anymore is poppy songs with safe vocals and electro-pop breakdowns. Is there any mainstream appeal for masculine music anymore, or is rock music in general being slowly phased out? It seems like nobody wants to hear rock anymore, even the kind that incorporates electro-pop elements into it, which I find kind of cool.
We need another male star like Marilyn Manson. Not as demonic, but a guy who can push boundries and not confine himself to traditional male gender roles. He was practically the Lady GaGa of rock during the late 90's and early 00's, and we need another dude like that again.
I think what's making most male stars boring these days is that a majority of them use autotune, they all wear plain clothes, suits and ties, and frankly, most in the pop genre sing generic love songs, like Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber. There's nothing interesting or controversial about them, and their music isn't really exciting, although I do like Bruno's album.
That's just my two cents.
This is not intended to be an attack against any faves or current mainstream music in general, so keep it nice. Please post your opinions below.

It bothers me so much that Justin Beiber is the most consistently successful white male in music that doesn't rap (Eminem).

Well, the only huge selling male artists of today that are good that I can think of are Jay-Z and Kanye, but this lack of presence doesn't bug me. In almost every genre category men get all the credit, men get all the sales, and men get all the acclaim, so its nice for women to win one.

With the rise of AutoTune and sexism in pop music, you've got a lot of women being signed to recording contracts who can't sing but are prepared to wiggle their boobs for their videos. As a result, there has been a rise in females overall. It doesn't necessarly indicate female empowerment, but, rather, exploitation of females.
You've also got the situation where the male singers are all trying to sound emo or rap. Both genres are so yesterday. As a result, they sound boring.

The last male pop-star that was equivalent to the pop girls in terms of relevancy and success was probably Justin Timberlake. He was nearing the top of the pop music hierarchy. Come to think of it, nowadays there isn't really any male artists that are just as prominent in pop culture. You get your typical dance-pop/R&B hybrid hits from Jason and Taio, but there isn't any male artists right now that can do it all. Not to discredit Bieber, but his following consists of mostly teenage girls. There are no guys right no that have the support of the whole public, male or female of all ages.

That applies to a huge bunch of the female popstars at the moment, too.

I don't know why, but I really prefer the male vocals over the female vocals
Calvin Harris & Example

The closest person to this unconventional norm you suggested is probably Jeffree Star. He was just signed to Akon's record label KonLive under Interscope, and his new single "Prom Night!" sounds like a smash. It's already gaining commercial airplay in Canada and debuts in the U.S. on March 8. I don't know if all people are ever willing to accept someone who subverts gender roles to the extreme like he does, but he is certainly different enough to gain some credible attention. Not only that, but he's built up a large online fanbase throughout the years. Now that he's making his mainstream debut, it will be interesting to see where it takes him.

the issue is the too much macho behaviour in the current male artists where they even go a notch higher by alienating audiences by discrimination and belittling them. They do not take risks and due to too much macho feel they suddenly are forced to conform to a certain way of style and behaviour thus killing their creativity and appeal for they get boring.

You could have had Adam, but it's too out there with his sexuality for massive amounts of people to support him.

I wouldn't want a genre saturated with them, but the only way a male rock/pop star will be massively popular again is if they go all out.
Jeffree Starr would be considered way too flamboyant to the public, more so than Adam Lambert, and someone like Manson could be popular if they toned down the demonic lyrics and symbolism.

I don't see what's wrong with how he dresses. I mean, it's tacky a bit, but if Nicki Minaj can stay popular with those outfits.....why not him?

Nicky is a FEMALE. That's the difference. Someone like Jeffrey Starr would not make it.
