It's more of a heartbreaking performance than a disappointing one. While she appeared very helpless, confused and unfocused on that stage, there was a perceptible anxiety/nervousness in her face and body language that suggested she realized just how much was riding on this performance. As out of it as she was, there's a degree of self-awareness that made this particularly depressing. It'd be another thing entirely if she had stumbled through a performance, taken a bow and exited the stage none the wiser ala Winehouse, but it's clear towards the end that Britney recognized her failure. I don't think there's anything more devastating than the look of shame/embarrassment that crept across her face at the end. This performance was a major confidence blow for Britney; one that I think she's still recovering from 4 years later.
It was irresponsible for anyone to think that Britney, in her broken state, was capable of handling the pressure of a major, so-called "comeback" performance. I fault Sam Lufti for pushing Britney to perform at the peak of her supposed "insanity" and turning this into a very make-or-break moment. I fault MTV for their lack of conviction, (by most accounts, they were initially reluctant to allow Britney to perform), providing her a platform on which she would more-than-likely make a fool of herself, and using the buzz surrounding the upcoming performance as the primary source of promotion for the entire event.
I think she badly wants to dance like her "old" self but the main factors is the ****ed up knee plus her medication which makes her legarthic, medication has a lot of side effects, esp. when it's in a heavy dosage.
The knee thing is total BS. She has had amazing performance since the knee......and no one TRULY knows about the medication/when or if she receives any.

Yeah, I guess it's all just one big mystery and all we can do is speculate and make assumptions.

amazing performances but not dancing with intensity like she use to, and def. with not as much as conviction as her "old" self. And she's def. on medication that she takes every day. It's the only reason she's been sane since her breakdown. Only medication could have turned it around so fast to combat her mental illness (which runs in her family) -- if she wasn't on medication than her behavior would be out of control like it was on 07. She's def. on medication.
I want Britney to try and dance let's say...hmm...Overprotected's choreo, not the remix but the original, I think that choreo is so Britney She slays slave 4 u even today, of course not as good as she used to but can still put if off nicely, however the latest choreography she's been getting is just not cutting it.

She's werking that knee to me.
[i]And the medication thing......it doesn't really make sense b/c we don't know WHEN she's medicated. Is it weekly? Daily? Before/after performances? She might be medicated, but not to the point where it interferes with performing.....
I honestly don't know what to think. I thought she didn't dance like she used to just because of her confidence but even the circus promo performances were better than the ones we got from this era. I don't think it's just laziness either. There's something we don't know, there has to be a reason because she used to be so happy when performing. So many things changed between the ITZ and Blackout era and now it's getting worse since the circus era.

Maybe she wants to retire. She has kids, is about to get married, it's time for her to enjoy her life.

but the her dancing in during the circus and F.F. tour.
but whatever, you're right. None of us really know but I personally believe it's a daily thing. She's def. legarthic on stage and there's no question about that. And I tend to forget about the 'Do something' video. Britney directed & choreographed it herself.
In retrospect, not much worse than a lot of performances delivered by popstars in 2011. I think the fact that she was a little overweight and out of shape is what got her the most criticism. Not too long ago she was an object of sexual fantasy with perfect abs, but there she had a bit of a gut hanging out. If she'd delivered this very performance looking like a 10, no one would have noticed.

But she keeps saying she doesn't want to. Some people think she released FF just because she wanted to tour but she would've made more money with a "goodbye" tour than with the FFT.
