I'm surprised no one mentioned the other possible option of why Gaga's songs were overproduced. Remember when basically every producer on BTW raved about how much freedom they had been allowed when they worked on her album. That normally, they were kind of restricted by what the label wants.

I think it was the malignant combination of her inexperience and the producers freedom that made the "anti radio-friendly" songs.

The fact that she performed the song on every major award/talk show WW and it hardly sold anything speaks volumes. Lyrically it was decent, but overall its extremely lackluster.
