I believe Metacritic base it on the context of the review and just assigns it a grade.

There are still reviews coming in, but I'm so glad that the vast majority of them have been very positive despite nearly all of them citing her "greatest album of the decade" quote (which really wasn't all that bad in context). The fact that she's getting great reviews and she's received so much backlash in past few months makes the critical reception so much sweeter. The album is by far the best release of the year and one of the best pop albums in a long time.

That's completely retarded and just another reason Metacritic is useless for music. That, and the 20 or so reviews they'll count are nowhere near enough to form an accurate consensus. With so few scores it only takes one person to bring the average up or down by a few points. A high profile videogame typically gets close to 100 reviews collected.

Honestly, though, I love what the reviews are saying about this album. If Gaga had put out The Fame 3.0 then I would have never been so interested and neither would reviewers. But this album is a milestone in sound engineering and will make huge waves in the pop landscape. I can't ****ing wait :banana3:

Only 13 media publications that are credited on Metacritic even bothered to review The Fame and The Fame Monster thus their high scores. Born This Way will likely get 20-30 reviews that count towards the site so it wouldn't be bizarre to expect a lower meta score since you have more people who may give it a lower score. As to where this lands on her album scale, I think it's her worst album personally so it wouldn't shock me that much to see that reflected in the reviews.

This album is all over the place. It has some clunky songs (Hair, Bad Kids, Highway Unicorn, Judas) and some refreshing ones (MTN, GH, Electric Chapel, HML, Bloody Mary, Scheibe). None of them are commercial - they won't be radio/digital hits. Not sure what she was thinking; she's a huge commercial pop star after all. I'm not suggesting she should develop scraped knees and lose her gag reflex to score big singles like her pop competition, but she should have aim for some balance. Anyway, the album doesn't represent the Gaga I fell in love with 3 years ago, but it's her life/career.
