Yes, S&M was a hit. But Britney is what's pushing it to be that number one. Without Britney, they would have been stuck with a 2x platinum top 2 hit. Nothing wrong with it but everybody would prefer a 3-4x platinum number one.
TTWE could have gone number one. Had they waited to release it digitally when the album was out, would have gone number one. Better yet done promotion when the single was out, would have done it. They ****ed up the release extremely hard.

Capitol played dirty too (not as dirty as this, but still). They released the song as a remix, & it got iTunes advertisement it would've never gotten without the separate release. My bet is that like S&M, the original E.T. wouldn't have made it to #1. It also wouldn't be selling 300K+ a week. Capitol, like Def Jam, is looking out for extra sales & higher peaks.
That's why they're doing this. E.T. is definently going triple platinum now & this remix may have similar results for S&M.
That would've been a ridiculous compression time for the single nowadays. It's no longer reasonable. Labels have finally realized that compression isn't all that helpful, & are releasing the song when it's still exciting & brand new. Wasn't it released 4 weeks before the album? Hardly any popstar waits 4 weeks. Also, it would've had to go against E.T. last week, which is getting 400+ Hot 100 points.
