I'm a huge Spider-Man fan and would like to see talented actresses take on roles, not Disney channel socialites (no shade but that's what she is, why is she at all these award ceremonies without ever being nominated?). The film is Sony, not Disney/Marvel, by the way, and Disney/Marvel have cast plenty of prestige actors in their films, which is part of the reason they keep being acclaimed. Look at the female leads in Marvel Cinematic universe films:

Iron Man - Gwyneth Paltrow
Incredible Hulk - Liv Tyler
Thor - Natalie Portman
Captain America - Scarlett Johansson
Ant Man - Evangeline Lily
Doctor Strange - Tilda Swinton
Guardians of the Galaxy - Zoe Saldana

Half of these are Oscar winners and all were beyond proven and had been in a wide range of films by the time they got cast.

By all means cast a POC actress (would love to see a Latina Maria Juana) but cast someone who deserves it

I'm just laughing at people who are happy that they made Mary Jane Watson black when there is an original black character ready to be adapted and explored on the big screen. Kinda tragic.

This couldn't be more wrong. Disney/Marvel have complete creative control over this movie (it takes place in the MCU) and they cast her. Sony is only footing the bill and snatching the profits.

We don't know for sure, yes, but, there is a chance they wanted to keep it under wraps. The response could hurt the film and bother some fans, as evident by some of the "disgusting" and "eww" comments in this thread.

That's an odd thing to laugh at. There's nothing funny to be found in the situation. And how is he ready to be adapted when it isn't? They actually are moving in the direction of Miles' takeover, that's not going to happen before they go through Peter's story in this new MCU. All the films are connected now.

Just out of curiosity, who would you have cast? I think it would be pretty unfair to compare any possible actress for this role to the other Marvel leading ladies because the spider-man cast is really young. They're really going for people who could pass for high schoolers here (most of them are like 19 or 20 I think), so who would you have cast if you had to pick someone in this age range?
