I don't think we'll ever see another artist just break out and smash like that ever again. Streaming and social media have changed the music industry. Music is more democratically consumed nowadays, whereas Gaga debuted in the days where a small group of artists pushed by major record labels pretty much monopolized the music industry.

Streaming isn't gonna prevent a 'few artists from monopolizing' and that never stopped happening.

In 2014 '1989' monopolized every single other release that year; same with '25' in 2015 which was even bigger than TFM.

And Streaming has created many monopolizing eras. Bieber's 'Purpose' which literally spawned 3 back to back #1 hits everywhere due to the huge streaming, and Drake's 'Views' has had a chokehold on the charts this Summer due to it's streaming.

There will always be a handful of artists that are largely above the rest, and set their records.

Exactly. Back then, if you were even semi-relevant and your songs were played on the radio, your albums sold well. It was a lot harder for artists to break into the industry but more rewarding when they finally did it. Nowadays, we have Soundcloud, Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, social media, etc. which makes it easier for people to find lesser known artists/bands, thereby creating more competition for bigger artists.

We need a different pop artist that twist the pop culture. Sadly we have Ariana, Selena and Demi, who had no impact.

1. Labels are not developing new artists to find their sound, image or be creative. They sign them, get them into the studio to record a trendy song and then release it. That's why these one-hit wonders all end up releasing the same kind of songs.

2. Plus less artists (especially new ones) are doing interviews these days so they're not showing their full personality. Just tweets and instagram posts here and there.

3. Not enough funding from record labels due to the decline of album sales.
