Yes I see these fomos fawning over her lyrics all the time but they're all basic high school poetry. Just because she adds a poetic element to pop music, it doesn't make it amazingly written. Like in the song Red she supposedly paints with her words but she's literally describing things with colors. It's nothing groundbreaking.

I guess but at least Mariah had INCREDIBLE vocals that allowed her to standout at that time, besides getting hits effortlessly. That's what made her the legend she is.

The song definitely had a lot of controversy, including several bans from several events, despite being a feel-good pop song. Homosexuality has come a LOOOONG way in the past 8 years. I'm no attributing the rise of acceptance to Katy Perry, that's foolish. But having a song like that being #1 for WEEKS was definitely a huge achievement at the time.
