I'm not sure what the benefits are to fighting gyms, I didn't get any items, I think you just claim the gym and become the gym leader, then you pick a Pokemon to send there and anyone who challenges the gym battles your Pokemon. I finally claimed a gym and I sent my Fearow, Pecker to battle challengers, so far he hasn't been beaten.

Gah, this game kind of sucks when you live in a rural neighborhood

I'm still having fun and I've caught like 14 (different) Pokemon. But there's only one gym and 3 poke-stops here. I walked around town for 2+ hours after work today to catch some, and I only met 11 new species Pokemon just don't show up as often in rural areas, it seems.

They need to add trading to this app, asap.

You can claim a 10 Pokegold and 500 Stardust reward per owned gym every 21 hrs. Max for this bonus is 10 gyms. There's a shield icon in the top right of the shop where you can claim your prizes.
