I love the competitive scene. I mean why do you ask for a harder game if you cant take things like stats into consideration? Cause girl if those gyms have good IV and EV trained pokemon you're gonna have to put a bit of effort.

competitive battling has absolutely nothing to do with a harder game and having a harder game can be counterbalanced with training to higher levels and being intentional about movesets so I'm not sure where you're going with this

Yeah, the other things don't matter as much for me either. But using stuff like Adamant Mismagius or Modest Breloom is so triggering. I'd never be able to do that.

fff me too, I last several minutes trying to catch at least a neutral nature cause if its hindering then it bugs me so much.
I have a love hate relationship with the competative scene at the moment but that's because they ban everything now. But I mainly do double battles now and it's a much more free and less tedious environment. I don't encounter the same teams nearly as much as I did with regular single battles in OU or UU.
I only really worry about natures in playthroughs tho. It's relatively easy to IV breed now once you get a 6IV ditto and honestly those are easy to come by these days. EV training is even easier with hoard battles. Gen VI really did a lot to try to make it far more accessible to players.
If by harder game you want higher levels that's really no challenge. You can always train to be overleveled. But ok.
No sister, what I'm saying is that you wouldn't have to get natures, abilities, IVs, and EVs all right just because the NPC's have higher IVs and EVs, better natures, and better abilities.
You can think the competitive metagame is awful and impossible to enjoy and still want a tougher game itself!
Idc about in game natures, but i do find myself on Bulbapedia looking up moves and whatnot. Trying to make sure I have coverage and etc. Even the mindset is different, switching out and trying to make predictions.
I think to make a "harder" game the NPC's should have more distinct move pools and the AI should be improved a bit. Things like giving gym leaders full thought out teams, the elite four six ****ing Pokemon and the Champion serving Cynthia level EV training and IVs. Subjectively , Pokemon isn't really a challenging game. Small things help though. With a bigger regional dex more diverse trainer battles can happen as well. Even giving trainers battle items they use in battles would be a nice step up or seeing the Gym leaders and E4 have certain types of teams would be interesting.
I know some of y'all hate it but grinding sometimes for a good team really does improve on the difficulty of the game
