South America just follows whatever is hot in the US and Europe, they just won't play urban/R&B songs

The only 'urban' song I've heard here in recent times is Work and that is because Rihanna is extremely beloved and a pop radio staple.

Not surprising. "We Belong Together" was mainly #1 for its dominance on pop and R&B radio. It only peaked at #2 in sales. "Hung Up" was a #1 sales hit (the only reason it was a top ten Hot 100 hit).

In any case, "WBT" did a better job of selling its parent album: 6 million for Mimi vs. 1.7 million for Confessions.

We Belong Together's 14 weeks at #1 pushed the album sales to amazing numbers, as digital sales hadn't taken off strongly in US yet and weren't a priority.

Confessions on a Dancefloor - 1.7 million

One of the last 10 albums in history to sell that much in US!

Radio isn't directly ageist. It doesn't refuse to play older artists because they're old (see "On the Floor", "Believe", or even Madge's hits from Music). Radio plays what its audience wants. Top 40 radio caters to teenagers and twentysomethings, who don't care about Madonna. So maybe society is ageist. But radio isn't.

EDM is popular in the us, mostly by college students, but no where near the extent as Europe. It was inescapable when I went there

I was at a club in Boston one time and they played it and surprisingly a lot of people seemed to know it based on how crazy the crowd went.

Radio definitely does not play what the audience wants anymore

The audience wanted On The Floor but it took the US radio a long time to actually accept it and play it

EDM being dead is such a fomo lie. Real, actual EDM is still very much a thing, even if you don't necessarily see it on the charts all the time.

It's just that pop stars moved on from it in favor of a more pure-pop sound.

"On the Floor" peaked in sales the chart week March 19, 2011. It peaked on pop radio May 28. That's a pretty standard gap considering radio is traditionally slow to pick up on most hits. Especially considering "On the Floor" was a sales hit right out of the gate.

"Used to Love You" kept randomly going top ten for a few days at a time before plummeting each time.

Nah, I remember it struggling on the radio

It eventually peaked at #5 and that was only because its sales were too big for the radio to ignore. If they weren't big in the beginning, the song would've peaked around like #25-#20

Even its #5 pop radio peak is ridiculous considering how huge it was
