Honestly Mystique has ran her course. There really isn't much for to do.
They can recast Rebecca, so that she can playout the nightcrawler & Rogue story line.
Her box office power is overrated. The hunger games was huge because of books. Xmen was huge before her.
Other than that she really hasn't opened anything on her own.

JLaw got DOFP and Apocalypse more press than the rest of the cast and collaborators combined and tripled. You may not like her, but her ability to be a lightning-rod for press is absolutely insane, and that's crucial for Fox's marketing strategy. Also she's been in three O'Russell movies where she was the highest profile person in terms of press and all three made serious bank and earned her Oscar noms (and a win) and all won her GGs. I'm sure Passengers will do great with her in December too.
Going forward with X-Men - if she stays then fine, but Mystique can now drop back. We have the newbies of Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Nightcrawler, etc. They can take center stage.
IDTS. Fox is a giant company they expect and even welcome losses once in a while plus the next movie is already on greenlight so no need to worry for the sequel.

Other X-Men movies are greenlit (Wolverine III, Gambit, Deadpool 2 and The New Mutants) but as of right now there is no team movie planned. How much they'll spend on that will be determined by Apoc and the other movies and how they perform at the BO.
I like JLAW tho. Sure she can bring in huge amounts of promo but the franchise doesn't need her. Cap america doesn't have a huge promo magnet like JLAW despite having imprtant actos. As long as the films continue to be made right, they'll be okay.

Honestly, if a scaled back budget forces them back into First Class budget territory, I wouldn't be mad. The movie was still beautiful to look at. Hopefully they are finding ways to cut Gambit's budget too.

Of course they CAN afford it. It is not always that you expect movies to be box office. Thats why I said they can afford to compared to other minor studios that one loss and the company crumbles. This is the only franchise Fox got the biggest right now so they surely wont let go of XMen they can even include deadpool and Gambit in the next Xmen movie.

Fox have the biggest phenomenon in global BO history about to be franchised (Avatar) as well as a bunch of high profile movies in the pipeline like Assassins Creed, Independence Day, etc. X-Men is very important but Fox don't need mega-movies from the franchise if they aren't going to bring in the big bucks. I don't think Fox will lose money on Apoc, but remember when Last Stand barely made that much back-end the franchise stalled for team movies until an overhaul could be achieved. I just hope they go to a more realistic place from now on - FC was so grounded and real, it reminded me of X-Men and X2. Last Stand and Apoc seem a bit too out there - they're trying too hard to be insane mammoth movies. DOFP somehow managed to accomplish that effortlessly, but it's the exception not the rule IMO.
