On TPP:
"This TPP sets the gold standard in trade agreements" - 2012
She’s also taken a leading part in drafting the Trans-Pacific Partnership - 2013
But wait...
Hillary Clinton Opposes [...] Trans-Pacific Trade Deal - 2015
Quote:
"Because TPP negotiations are still ongoing, it makes sense to reserve judgment until we can evaluate the final proposed agreement. It’s safe to say the TPP won’t be perfect -- no deal negotiated among a dozen countries ever will be -- but its higher standards, if implemented and enforced, should benefit American businesses and workers."

The deal was negotiated across the span of 5 years....people change positions on bills in the course of a couple of months based off poison pill amendments and other provisions added. This is a non-controversy.
On Assad
"Many of the members of Congress [...] have said they believe he's a reformer" - 2011
Until
"Assad was the principle threat, because his bombarding, and his ruthless behavior toward his own people, was going to create more terrorists - 2015
Two days after she made that comment in 2011 she said this because her comment was taken out of context, just as you have done.
Quote:
"I referenced opinions of others," Clinton said. "That was not speaking either for myself or for the Administration."
She said the administration deplored the Syrian crackdown on protesters and that it’s up to Syria’s leaders "to prove that it can be responsive to the needs of its own people."
Clinton went on. "We’re troubled by what we hear, but we’re also going to continue to urge that the promise of reform, which has been made over and over again and which you reported on just a few months ago – ‘I’m a reformer, I’m going to reform, and I’ve talked to members of Congress and others about that,’ that we hear from the highest levels of leadership in Syria – will actually be turned into reality," she said. "That’s what we’re waiting and watching for."

On lifting Cuba embargo
"I’m not ready to vote to lift the embargo." - 2000
Clinton said now is "not the time to consider wholesale or broad changes to our Cuba policy." - 2008
However
Cuba embargo is a "failed policy" - 2014
It was not the time to do so while Fidel was President. Obama has waited until the last 2 years of his term to bring Cuba policy to the forefront...even though he made it a cornerstone of his 2008 campaign. You can not take one sentence answers of a complex issue that requires the cooperation of both countries, but it doesn't change the fact that even the person who was advocating for meeting FIdel in the first days of his presidency did not accomplish the work he set forth until the last two years.
In 2000
Quote:
"I believe before the United States should lift the embargo, Castro should make some good faith show of moving toward ending repression, freeing political prisoners and some steps toward democratization,"
|
In 2008
Quote:
In a debate on Univision in February 2008, Clinton said "as president, I would be ready to reach out and work with a new Cuban government, once it demonstrated that it truly was going to change that direction."
|
2014
Quote:
In her 2014 book Hard Choices, Clinton wrote that near the end of her tenure as secretary of state, she recommended that Obama review the embargo. She wrote that the embargo "wasn’t achieving its goals, and it was holding back our broader agenda across Latin America. After 20 years of observing and dealing with the U.S.-Cuba relationship, I thought we should shift the onus onto the Castros to explain why they remained undemocratic and abusive."

On Iran's Right To Enrich Uranium
"Iran can enrich uranium" - 2010
But then
"I’ve always been in the camp that held that they did not have a right to enrichment" - 2014
The iran deal...if anything, will potentially be hailed as her greatest success if it works out. Here is the full quote from 2010
Quote:
And who was the first high American official to suggest the U.S. might accept an Iranian uranium enrichment program? None other than Clinton, all the way back in 2010. In an interview with BBC that year, the then-secretary of state said of Iran: “They can enrich uranium at some future date once they have demonstrated that they can do so in a responsible manner in accordance with international obligations.”
She made similar statements to other journalists that year, including Time’s Michael Crowley. It was obviously a carefully constructed trial balloon. Clinton tethered the balloon with conditions—“responsible manner,” “international obligations”—but there it was, fluttering beguilingly. “No, absolutely” had just been amended to “Yes, possibly.”
That amended formula made an impact on somebody. Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, rose to power in Iranian politics as the country’s chief nuclear negotiator during the mid-2000s. In that job, he showed an acute ear for minute changes to the Western position. What Clinton offered in her BBC interview was anything but minute. It promised that Iran could gain a large measure of international acceptance without a total surrender of its nuclear capability. Three years later, that outcome is just what Rouhani has achieved.
|
Her saying those concessions publicly allowed for negotiations to move forward in a way that has been praised internationally. As a representative of the United States under Barack Obama she advocated for a deal that would be accepted by the Iranians...is it the one she would ultimately prefer. No...since it is a compromise. She would have ultimately wanted no enrichment of uranium. When you are Secretary of State, however, you need to make hard choices and this is one of the concessions that I believe will ultimately help begin the re-acceptance of Iran into the international forum.
On the Keystone XL Pipeline
Clinton was seen as initially favoring construction of the pipeline - 2010
Until
"I oppose [the pipeline] because I don’t think, I don’t think it’s in the best interest of what we need to do to combat climate change." - 2015
True
On Deportation of Illegal Immigrants
Clinton is "adamantly against illegal immigrants." - 2003
But wait...
She has advocated an immigration policy that would go further [...] to shield some illegal immigrants from deportation - 2015
True
On Driver's Licenses for Illegal Immigrants
Clinton now Against Licenses for Illegal Immigrants - 2007
However
This time, Hillary Clinton supports giving driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants - 2015
This is true, she has waffled significantly on this issue.
On Federal Gun Control
Blanket rules set by the federal government on guns "doesn't make sense." - 2008
Another source - 2008
Until
Clinton proposes using executive action as president to expand background check requirements - 2015
Universal background checks was advocated by her also in 2008. What she was referring to in 2008 was how federal blanket law that is weak does not make sense in violent ridden communities that are dealing with gun violence. Localities should be able to govern in some sort of way to control guns since the local police forces will be the ones carrying it out. She also stated in 2008 she was for a federal assault weapons ban. Her votes and positions of holding gun makers liable, banning assault weapons, and requiring universal background checks has been consistent from 2000 to 2016. NOTHING has changed and you can see that here. It is a nice conservative talking point though.

On Gun Ownership and Culture
Gun ownership, hunting "part of culture. It’s part of a way of life." - 2008
But wait!
Clinton said Tuesday that gun culture in the U.S. has become "way out of balance." - 2014
Quote:
"I respect the 2nd Amendment. I respect the rights of lawful gun owners to own guns, to use their guns. But I also believe that most lawful gun owners whom I have spoken with for many years across our country also want to be sure that we keep those guns out of the wrong hands. And as president, I will work to try to bridge this divide, which I think has been polarizing and, frankly, doesn’t reflect the common sense of the American people.”
|
This is still consistent with her position today. She is not advocating for taking guns away, but holding people liable and making sure guns have the right precautions as well as measures to stop people who shouldn't be getting them. She has and always has advocated for gun regulation, not the end of all guns. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous
On Gay Marriage
"Marriage has got historic, religious and moral content that goes back to the beginning of time, and I think a marriage is as a marriage has always been, between a man and a woman" - 2000
Marriage is "a sacred bond between a man and a woman." - 2004
In response to a question about whether marriage should be made legally available to two committed adults of the same sex, Clinton marked that she was "opposed" - 2007
However
After leaving her position as secretary of state, she announced her support for same-sex marriage - 2013
On Mass Incarceration and Minimum Sentences
[Clinton] explicitly attacked then-competitor Senator Barack Obama for being soft on crime. After the Iowa primary, her campaign said Obama's opposition to mandatory minimum prison sentences was an example of his out-of-touch liberalism
Until
[Clinton wants to] End the era of mass incarceration, reform mandatory minimum sentences
https://www.themarshallproject.org/2...der#.o0iYsgnvh
Maybe if you went back into the 70s you would see all the work Clinton was advocating for and doing in prison reform. She had to mute her efforts in the 80s and 90s due to being the supportive wife of her husband, who had the political limelight. The incarceration she fought for as senator was for those commiting hate crimes and sex offenders. She advocated for investing in drug-treatment programs over incarcerating drug users. She stated in 2007 non-violent drug offenders should not be incarcerated. She has always discussed ending mandatory minimums for nonviolent offenders. The era of mass incarceration is mainly due to the war of drugs...which are nonviolent offenses for the most part. This is consistent with her views.
On Flip Flopping
Some people might say a person's opinion on topics changing throughout the years is understandable. Hindsight can allow for reflection and new knowledge or public opinion can help shape a new position on a topic.
Except that
"I have been very consistent," Clinton said, arguing her unyielding fealty to "the same values and principles" over her entire life. - 2015
Principles do not change, positions might. You can still adhere to principles of trying to bring the best change an individual can make possible, but still have a different view on positions throughout the years. It is a natural progression of a species to evolve on topics and views throughout a lifetime. As I have gotten older I have gotten more fiscally conservative, but that does not mean my principle in lifting people out of poverty has changed...I simply believe there is a better way for it to be achieved.
---------
She has wavered significantly on issues, such as illegal immigration, marriage, and climate change. When you have had as much prolific leadership experience as Hillary Clinton of course you are going to be tacked to policies that have failed or not done their due. However, the basis for many of these claims and "flip flops" are exaggerations of one sentence snippets from thousand and thousands of transcripts worth of spoken and written word by her. The reality is, she is married to a moderate democrat from Arkansas who she stood by in the 90s. She was elected Senator to represent the views of the people of New York. She served under President Obama in HIS cabinet, advising him to the best of her ability while still recognizing that he is commander in chief and the executive in making decisions. She has fumbled on issues, while led on others, just as any politician has. Ultimately, HRC supporters like her because we view her as someone that will get things done. Will it always be the best course of action? No, probably not. She will be able to find solutions through compromise, even if she needs to concede some of the original hopes she had. It is what a leader and executive does
