Nicki is the biggest female rapper the world has seen. Even if she doesn't seem huge right now, she will FOR SURE be seen as an icon.
Lorde has potential, but I don't see her playing the traditional pop game.
Ellie is the most consistent, but she's just a moderate hitmaker. Ariana's gonna need a lot to come anywhere close to her sophomore album peak. And does anyone really take Meghan seriously?
Selena's the only girl from this decade that get's bigger with each era, she she's definitely in the running.
Maybe it's my age and growing up but I agree. Lady Gaga/Katy Perry/Adele were the last ones in 2008. Most of them (aside Nicki) cater to 13 year olds. It would be devastating if that generation looks back in 50 years time and sees someone like Meghan as a legend when we got Whitney, Mariah, Madonna etc
We don't even have to compare their sales. They are not even close to the senior pop girls' star power, hype, popularity etc.... "major pop girl" my ass.
I think based on numbers alone, you could make arguments for Meghan, Lorde and Ariana with the streaming, but it feels like the celebrity element is lacking terribly. None of these newer girls feel like STARS in the way that the previous generations did -- it feels like people like Kendall and Kylie Jenner are much bigger celebrities and kind of occupy that end where it used to be the hot young pop stars eating up those entertainment headlines and having that level of ubiquity outside of the music charts. Maybe it's just the climate and the way times are progressing I guess, but it's definitely not like it was before.
This is true
The Kardashian/Jenner clan has absorbed completely the celebrity culture that popstars used to have.
I think a new pop star as famous as Kendall Jenner and as musically successful as Meghan can be the main popstar this decade.
But those 2 factors seem impossible to combine these days with all this competition.

Meghan Trainor is our Cyndi Lauper, in my eyes. Rank Cyndi against the three legends you mentioned as you please.

Selena didn't debut in the 10's and Miley's had more success than her from that generation anyway.
Honestly they all suck/lack star power and are not even good entertainers...music wise they're good but they don't have that iT/special thing that made the ones you mentioned stars.

Exactly the only one that has that ''it'' factor is Lana, and she's never gonna find those levels of fame as the ones in the OP because of the type of music she produces.
would be the crop of this decade's pop girls...however, they're not being smart enough. Tori and Ariana are under the Scooter Braun umbrella and he's not a good manager of female acts. They need to hire new management. Ariana hasn't really honed in on her SOUND. Tori hasn't brought enough personality and edge. Twitter LIT UP when her shady gif at the Grammys occurred. And Tinashe has the acclaim and is truthfully the best urban performer since Ciara but doesn't have the chart success yet or likability with the GP yet.
