I meant as in how society identifies you. It doesn't matter if you keep saying you're agender because they see boobs, you're female, they see pecs, you're male. You can self identify as anything you want but that wont really have an impact on anyone besides you.

You may be on to something here about Avatar, but I think it is moreso a matter of the writing for movies being really poor now. Everything gets regurgitated. If you want to see interesting plot twists and character development, you basically have to watch some sort of drama series now.

You're assuming everyone cares what people think about them. Sometimes people don't need validation about their identity from others, they just accept themselves and choose friends who do the same!

You can have a movie be completely focused on being a visual spectacle and engrossing 3D and still be a great movie in the 2010s. Look at Life of Pi and Gravity - great movies.
