She has some messy lyrics like the plastic bag and the unzip and strip ones, she uses a lot of clichés... but her lyrics speak directly to the listener and anyone can relate. Obviously we all love Katy or we wouldn't be here, but we all at the same time know what's stopping her from going from being what she is (a pop star) to being something really great (an icon), and for the most part - it's her inability to WRITE something great. Like "Roar" really could have been anthem had all the lyrics been less "now I'm floating like a butterfly" and more matured. Like I get why she did it, she is writing for youth, it was light and catchy and honestly I do like it. But it also the one thing that has stopped her from showing real artistic progress. Teenage Dream & PRISM were more or less at the same level, achieving the same thing (big smash hits), not we are just praying for something wiser, matured and deeper. We're ready.
