Even if Justin doesn't get #1 he'll still have had his highest first week ever and continue getting hits that the GP are eating up left and right and no doubt his album will probably sell more in the end because of the fact that his hits aren't front loaded and people outside of his base care to check out his music

What? No. I'm saying no one will care if Bieber or 1D gets the number 1 outside of stans who obsess over these things. Most people don't remember sales/chart numbers or really care. No one irl is gonna be like OMFG JB/1d sold 500K in their first week or OMFFGG JB got the #1 album. All they know if Justin put out good songs that was constantly on radio and 1D was kind of non existent for singles. Someone like Flo-rida isn't even consistent with his hits so why would anyone care about him. Like go ask any average college or high school student and see if they know or care JB and 1D released the same week and are fighting for sales and #1.

At the end of the day regardless of who comes out on top Purpose will be the album/era that is remembered because the singles are huge and he released music that is so different than his old stuff. A Bangerz tea.

It has just come to my attention, and it makes me wonder how much less 1D's opening numbers would be if fans weren't buying 4 copies each of the same album?

According to Industry sources it's their biggest pull.

There's a difference between promoting your album and discounting it.

What artist puts their heart and soul into a record and then is all "Yeah, lets sell this for $4". It's just a cheap tactic to potentially shift more units.

No one is disputing that the promo for this album is next level, but how about you stand by your music and if your fans are gonna fully support you have them pay full price. I imagine after the discount stops, fans will still buy the album.

Only the hardcore stans are buying 4 copies of each - don't forget that even if you buy all 4 that if you only do it in one transaction (which most kids who are buying this are probably getting the money from their parents and having them pay for it), it only counts as one sale. (Same goes for Bieber of course.)

There's nothing wrong w/ reducing the price of your album, most people would actually prefer something be cheap on price and accessible.

Justin being ever so generous that he cut the original price in half giving everyone a chance to purchase the album.

Albums are always on sale first week at target. Not just Justin's. I spent 4 in a half years working at target.
