The video basically said current racially categories were made up by some racist German scientist. So if race is a made up construct.....

I can't believe what I'm reading. I spent days, crying and screaming that I wasn't white because of how people treated me. And now this chick is supposed to just be allowed to swoop in and call herself black and I'm supposed to just accept that.
Like I didn't have to put up with the n word, or job rejections, or being scared of people "sworn to protect my life" and this woman who doesn't have to deal with ANY of that is allowed to assume my racial identity. I had to fight to make this far in life as a black bisexual man, and I am still fighting. I am happy that Rachel Dolezal is on my side as far as fighting for equality, but she doesn't get to share my identity with me. She doesn't have to deal with the things I have to deal with on a daily basis, she doesn't have to deal with the looks and she doesn't have to deal with the social pressures of not being good enough just because I was born with some more sun protection. This IS an insult to black people.

Yeah but you think it should be okay for people who are, say, black to claim that they identify as white or Asian and vise versa? That makes no sense to me, granted I am ignorant on the issue. This idea of trans-racial is new to me.

If people thought she was black this entire time how do you know she hasn't dealt with the same issues you have?

Sis, in some of these pics she could definitely pass as a litebrite. I've seen black women just as light as her.
I mean

No, she's NOT black, but she has been living life and experiencing it as such for two decades. Unless you're going to go into how lightskin blacks are treated differently than darkskin blacks, you're argument isn't making sense in this specific instance. It's not even just her physical appearance, but she was the president of the NAACP in her city, I doubt anyone suspected much or that she was swimming in white privilege. Most people probably thought she was biracial.

I'm not outraged or anything but this is a joke. If a black person did this to be white it would be a joke as well. First of all, what dark person could pull off being white without looking a damn fool? No matter which way you put it, it's a god damn joke. And to compare it to being transgender and even stretch it to Michael Jackson - who never looked white a day in his life. Are ya'll out of your minds?

I agree that trans people should identify as trans people rather than the gender/race they feel like. Caitlyn shouldn't be considered a woman but a transwoman, and Rachel should be a transblack.

I don't really know. I support transgender people being who they truly are. Do I consider her to "black" in a literal sense, no. But if she wants to identify that way, who I am to say she can't, I guess? I don't have a firm opinion on this.

Another thing, I feel like if a black person tried to pass themselves as a white person, they'd be called a self-hater. I don't want to be insensitive towards some people's views but it does sound a bit ridiculous to me as well.

And she can easily wipe away all those issues by taking out her braids and leaving the bronzer off. What she is doing is akin to blackface.
Like white people don't have a history of forcing black people to adhere to their culture just so they can get by. Black people come from long lines of broken homes and broken cycles that white people caused, and white people consistently mock black people for it. Y'all comparing this to Caitlyn is wrong and it's insulting to black people and transgender people.

As people have consistently done for years under the term "Oreo"?

You need to read this op-ed in the Times last week. This author basically said the same thing about Caitlyn and gender that you're saying about this white woman and race. The author is being dragged by the feminist community as a Terf.
The thing is, you say that race/blackness is not on a spectrum, but it is and always has been in the US, even with the one drop rule. We may no longer live in the era of the one drop rule, but society will largely treat you based on how they read your phenotype and features. But even during slave days, blackness was treated as a spectrum: house slaves vs. field slaves, light skinned privilege, etc., etc. Black privilege in the US is often dependent upon proximity to whiteness. There is a difference in how the world perceives and treats Rashida Jones as opposed to Serena Williams, despite the fact that both women are black.
Lost in this discussion are black people who can pass and either choose to live their lives as culturally white or benefit from white privilege despite having black ancestry. Just like transmen are being lost in this discussion. Transmen who can pass as cis-gendered benefit from patriarchy.

I wonder how she will react to this, will she wipe it off or stay true to her self-image?

First show me a black person that isn't already bi-racial and or light skin that can pass as a white person. Anyone any darker could be easily clocked.
To me, it's easier to pull off being black, just like it's easier for transmen to pull off looking like biological men than some transwomen pulling off looking like biological females.

Also, gender is NOT a social construct in the same way race has been a social construct. Gender as a social construct was developed equally by men and women, and incorrectly developed as being tied to biological sex. Yes, men oppressed women - but it was never developed as a means to torment and dehumanize women.
Race as a social construct WAS ALWAYS intended to be used by white supremacy to dehumanize and torment POCs.
It is NOT the same thing. You don't get to switch races when you are part of the same people who ripped apart our families, ripped apart our lives and continue to torment us in any way they can.

I agree - Gender as a social construct is about assigning roles and behaviors (which are often oppressive and restrictive), while race as a social construct has always been about creating a system of discrimination based on developed ideas of race.
