Nothing against queen Ri, but what is the message or the social awareness you guys are talking about? The video portrays different sides of the USA. Is it meant to show system critic? Like Rihanna against capitalism? That would be embarrassing.

If anything she is supporting capitalism.... have you seen tidal?
How is it pandering when it shows the ugly side of american history?.
Toby Keith's Courtesy of the red white and blue is pandering.
Exactly. It's a direct response to songs like that which cause people to uncritically sing in praise of America without ever confronting the full picture of what it is they're praising.

She's against a "capitalism" that pretends to make it possible for anyone and everyone to succeed if you just work hard enough, when in fact the system is designed to run on the poor "sweating for a nickel and a dime" in service of an empire that oppresses them and keeps them down. It's not embarrassing; it's radical.

She worked/works with so many fashion labels which are using modern slaves in Asia, etc.. From this point of view the video seems a bit hypocritical .
So basically she's saying "we breathe the same oxygen as the people who did ALL THIS **** i'm showing you in the video"? Because the image its paints of America is not the tea, at least it is sincere and is not some football game, new york city, kfc family mess

It's the ugly truth though it's merely showing what America was and to an extent still is.
The country was not founded on very moral beginnings to start with.
