That's very true. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the new generation is more focused on hits & production and what can make them move instead of quality and substance.
Drake, Kendrick, and J. Cole are definitely going to be the Jay, Biggie, and Pac for our/the younger generation in 10-20 years. Kanye too.

But she is VERY overrated in the black community. This girl in my class said she would've been the next Michael Jackson if she still was alive. But I hate when people use her being overrated because her death to discredit her, when every singer who dies becomes overrated.

"This girl in my class" copy k
I can agree that death brings overrating.

I LIVE for these kinds of intelligent music discussions!
And...are you implying that...none of them has a...timeless classic? Because you may be right.

Basically.
BUT Kendrick does have a classic album (could be two depending on how well TPaB holds up). There isn't that song or two that defines an era from him yet. To say Drake has so many hits, his songs just come and go. They haven't defined anything.

All of this. I was thinking, out of those three, 4 if you include Kanye, he might be the only way that will have classic records that stand the test of time. Most of those records would be from Graduation and prior.
I think social media also hinders the appreciation for a lot of the music. For some reason J. Cole is clowned a lot but he makes such great music and it's so relatable. He literally has something for everyone. Even a lot of people were clowning Kendrick for the more serious tone he took with TPAB.

My boy asked me this yesterday and for the criteria that I have for a classic,, I'd say no BUT it's his best album and I don't think I'll ever grow tired of it. It'll be a personal classic for me.

Am I the only one who was rude af during my first months on the site?
I always come across 2012 posts and don't even understand why I was so mean to people for no reason.

It's so funny I own all of Kanye's records (except Yeezus bc no way) but I've only ever listens to MBDTF and I'm pretty sure it's widely considered a classic, Sneak.
J. Cole's album was full of relatable sentiments absolutely. That's why I loved it.

It's crazy how forgotten "Best I Ever Had," "Find Your Love" and the like are. It probably has something to do with him releasing so many singles in so many years, and each single doesn't have much time to live. He's a hitmaker, but his hits aren't memorable.

Yess, I re-visited those in 2014 and was obsessed all over again for like 3 months because I had completely forgotten they existed.
Even "Headlines", "The Motto", and "Crew Love" were SO HUGE and always being sung/rapped in school, and like I haven't heard those SINCE the Take Care era.
Even Started from the Bottom is already forgotten. Poor bae.

I still see "Started from the Bottom" referenced as a meme. Why?
I commend Drake for bringing the hits to urban radio, but they just come and go. They're like "quick lil singles." He made his impact I guess, similar to Nelly in the '00s.
..........
"Making Love In The Rain" is so sensual. Ugh, love it.
