Born This Way, Loud and Teenage Dream sold the same. 100k more or less doesn't really make a difference when most people who have the album have it illegally anyway. Album sales don't really represent much anymore unless they are millions of copies apart (like ARTPOP and Prism).

Beyst sold more albums without any hits at all! And 1989 would've smashed whether Shake It Off went #1 or not.
true but i definitely think 1989 had a MASSIVE boost from shake it off, it definitely would have done similar but probably lesser numbers. prism rode off her singles, which is true i guess, but she still sold a good amount of albums to her name.

Rihanna is now the great hope for AOTY. There will be a lingering sentiment that a black woman should win it. And she has the acoustic sound, the working with legends way past their prime, and the stripped down look. I think she could take it.
