Let's not be delusional...If Rih tried to do a surprise release it would flop (by Rihanna standards) and she'd get dragged to Hell by everyone, me included.  She doesn't have the fanbase to surprise drop an album and have it be a major success. Hell, half the" Navy" doesn't even buy her albums now and her casual fans are really only here for singles.
I want an announcement at least a month in advance, and promo spots on Ellen, SNL, and late night.

If you have a big name and you drop an album out of nowhere, people will talk about it, share links, and discuss it.
People will want to be part of the madness and tons of people will buy it blindly.
Everything inflates since it's available only if you buy it.
If you add those bonus sales to the core fans (who waited 2 years): you have huge sales.
That's what happened to Beyoncé who went from 300k in 7 days for "4" to 1 million+ in 7 days for BEYONCÉ.
