Also totally disagree with the OP saying Erotica or American Life are "risky" or "edgy". Neither of which is true. Sex is really banal and overdone and exploiting tragedy is ... well, you can finish that sentence. But "risky" is not something I'd attribute to either of those eras in my opinion.

I would love to see the science. I would love to read about how Lady gaga scientifically takes risk and how science proved that, by all means please go ahead and post the evidence of that claim. It would be a good read for me.
Sex wasn't banal or overdone when Erotica was released. I'm not sure if you actually read the OP to disagree with it but i suggest going back and reading it, It clearly explains to social context under which erotica was released. I feel like a proper reading of the OP may help you gain an understanding of music history that I feel like you're missing, given the fact you're applying to same social climate as today to an album released in the 90's.
Exploiting a tragedy? By the stage erotica was released Madonna had lost her best friend (and roommate) to aids as well as another friend and music collaborator. She had also since the 80's taken part in, organised and donated to several aids related charities and at one stage even started a rumour that she herself was HIV positive so the worlds spotlight would focus on it.
It's the epitome of ignorance for anyone to suggest that Madonna was "exploiting" anything given the fact she was directly affected by it and often selflessly campaigned for the cause.
Anyways, if that's the opinion you hold you're certainly entitled to it, even if it is historically incorrect and even if evidence points towards the exact opposite.
