I totally understand where you are coming from, but you need to PROTECT your child from ignorant people as much as possible. I know it all boils down to protection of your child from the ignorant people out there, but constraining them can be just as damaging. It could be more psychological than physical. Being straight is adapting to society, so would you limit their homosexuality/bisexuality? Breaking away from society rules is how a lot of progress has been made (racially, sexually, gender...ly?).
We can always tell them what we think, but we can't always stop them. Look at people who were in a very conservative home environment, and see how they were unleashed out into the world and went overboard because their parents never brought up lifestyle issues (drugs, sexuality, etc).
Yeah, it's definitely sad that people can't be who they want to be (as long as they don't hurt themselves or others).
