Naw I studied American History for a little while actually. I still don't understand the whole "you look like this so you can't be influenced by this" ******** that goes on over there. Truly baffling.

I agree that white males, gay or straight, should not appropriate culture and black female personalities. Bottom line.
But your arguments got messy. It is FOOLISH to tell us to check our privilege because there are MANY of us who CANNOT hide our gayness. We are naturally flamboyant and feminine. That's why we get bullied, attacked and commit suicide... because we cannot hide it even when we DENY it because homophobes won't let gender roles go.
I was bullied all the way from middle school to high school because I wasn't macho or athletic... I was feminine and liked theatre. And how dare anyone tell me I should pretend to be anything other than what I am.
A feminine gay man can't "hide" his gayness. If he tries to talk deep and "macho" -like... he will sound like an idiot and it will be obvious.
I would never tell a black person to bleach their skin and get a nose job... because that's racist. telling a feminine gay man to act like a "man" is misogynistic and homophobic. Gender roles are superficial and fake.
So please... for the love of EQUALITY, stop demeaning the amount of oppression and inequality other minorities face as well. It's not a competition.
Again, I agree with your main point... but those arguments are ignorant as hell.

I don't think she was telling anyone to hide their sexuality though? While you shouldn't have to, she's saying it is possible for you to do so. Good at it or not, when you're in public you have the ability to deepen your voice and straighten your walk and turn the other cheek when you see a cute guy. A black person can't hide their skin color.

I at least try to sugarcoat things considering ATRL's demographic.
They get straight to the point .
Lemme go tho.

yeah ok that's a strawman, i never said that black people are never harassed at all (even though i don't really see much of that but whatever), but the level of outright harassment and hatred is much worse for gay people. i don't even understand how that's up for debate. but all you want i guess and assume i don't know anything because that must be easier

Honestly, I'm from the UK and we don't have this issue over here. When I first started looking at websites like ATRL or Tumblr it always baffled me why people in 2014 were still so fixated on segregation.
Culture exists to be shared. In the wise words of 2013's biggest box office hit: "Let it go."

my exact sentiments as a Canadian
You will never have equality if you continue to encourage segregation

but i really don't agree with that philosophy. i don't think things should be considered racism, homophobia, etc. unless they were done from an actual place of prejudice, because people's prejudice is the real problem, not the jokes. i don't think acting like a stereotype really necessarily comes from prejudice, because that's no guarantee that they actually think these stereotypes are true. if they actually think black women are all sassy or whatever, then go after them for that, but this doesn't necessarily prove anything about their beliefs. and the idea that acting like a stereotype is appropriation is just stupid. black women didn't even come up with those stereotypes, they're harmful things that aren't part of anyone's culture.
i really don't believe appropriation is always a bad thing. if it doesn't really negatively affect anyone, which this doesn't (offending people really doesn't count as a negative effect), there's nothing wrong with it. i think appropriation is only bad when it involves disrespecting something sacred or outright stealing ideas and taking credit for them, and this doesn't fall into either of those categories.
and i don't know, i didn't look anything up or anything, it's just that in my experience gay people are treated much, much worse than black people if people know they're gay. maybe that just applies where i live, but black people here face things like stereotypes while gay people get things that are a lot worse, like job discrimination, bullying, and being treated like way less than people.
|
But that's part of what's so offensive. Black people didn't really walk around looking like the way they were portrayed in minstrel shows either. I've never seen a sleeping Mexican with a hat pulled over his eyes and an Asian person has never snatched up my dog. Whether they're true or not is not the issue. It's the fact that they are exaggerated stereotypes and are being happily played upon by people who could care less about the truth behind any of it. That in itself is offensive.
I also don't agree that offending people isn't a negative thing.

Black people face injustices every day of their life based on a racist system that works against them because they're black. You're born black, you can't help it. It's inhumane, illogical, and just plain wrong to be racist.
Gays IN GENERAL (white, latino, asian, black) face bullying, homophobic jokes, and injustices every day of their life as well based on a homophobic and misogynistic system that works against them because they're gay. We're naturally gay... whether we're born gay or we naturally grow into homosexuals... it's natural and we cannot help it. It's inhumane, illogical, and just plain wrong to be homophobic and misogynistic.
MAYBE you didn't realize but bullying isn;t just verbal harassment and pranks... it's physical violence that leads to death all too often based on someone's hate for that person being who they NATURALLY are.
Tell me again how PRIVILEGED I was when I was almost driven to suicide? Thankfully, no one has ever physically harmed me because I was gay but I'm ONE case to many others that are.

Not to demean your struggle, but this really isn't the thread or the conversation.

I'm sorry but no. I'm by no means saying that gay people aren't discriminated against but to compare it to the literal years and years of oppression of black people is just a mess.
A gay white man is still at FAR more of an advantage in life than any black person for the simple fact that they are white. Period.

so being harassed endlessly and having your life ruined and wanting to die are nothing now??? what exactly are black people facing in your world that's worse than that??? unless they're being thrown in woodchippers every day, you can't call it "nothing". there's so many gay people that have killed themselves or been severely depressed because of bullying, saying it's nothing is minimizing other people's problems so much that it's actually pretty offensive.
and that's not the only problem gay people face either. injustices are terrible but so is not even being able to live your life because people won't leave you alone. the individual experiences of those people are way worse than those of black people that are being affected by an unfair society. those individual experiences add up to a population that has a lot of difficult problems facing them and it's annoying when people act like black people have it significantly worse than them.
not only that but a lot of the issues black people face overlap with the ones gay people face
|
did you really just saw that?

This post...
I hope you're trolling. A gay male who is naturally feminine shouldn't have to conform to the standards of society to be accepted. How about society leave them alone and mind their own business?
But this isn't the thread for this topic.

You need to stop right now and think for a minute. Every person and every group endures struggles and experiences you will never know and see. You and I will NEVER know what it's like to be a black person in America (or a minority in any society).

Okay but what sense is there in bringing up our ability when it doesn't matter? We shouldn't HAVE to. Just like how black people shouldn't have to compromise their own selves.
And yes... they can. If you want to get technical. It is POSSIBLE for them to bleach their skin, wear a wig and get a nose job. But obviously, they should never EVER be told to or pressured into doing that.
Sure they can... but what's the point in bringing that up? They shouldn't HAVE TO.

I'm black and gay and I don't feel this way. They're ate a lot of gay whites or whites period that are worser off then me. I think this is straight B.S. to make us blacks look like nothing but victims.

You can't blame some people for not completely understanding/gliding over her true argument. She uses aggressive language and kind of comes off as unappealing. She makes some really valid points but those points are shaded by her abrasiveness. She's an English major but doesn't know how to properly use her rhetoric when discussing such a sensitive topic. She needs to get some tips from someone like Chimamanda or watch/read Angelou
