Racism sadly is still an actual issue in today's world, so is homophobia, rape, murder, theft, pedophilia, homelessness and it's 2014.

Also, where are these numbers you apparently found on blacks being killed for being black vs. gays being killed for being gay. I know you said it doesn't matter but you did feel the need to bring it up so I'm just wondering how you can guarantee you're right.

but i really don't agree with that philosophy. i don't think things should be considered racism, homophobia, etc. unless they were done from an actual place of prejudice, because people's prejudice is the real problem, not the jokes. i don't think acting like a stereotype really necessarily comes from prejudice, because that's no guarantee that they actually think these stereotypes are true. if they actually think black women are all sassy or whatever, then go after them for that, but this doesn't necessarily prove anything about their beliefs. and the idea that acting like a stereotype is appropriation is just stupid. black women didn't even come up with those stereotypes, they're harmful things that aren't part of anyone's culture.
i really don't believe appropriation is always a bad thing. if it doesn't really negatively affect anyone, which this doesn't (offending people really doesn't count as a negative effect), there's nothing wrong with it. i think appropriation is only bad when it involves disrespecting something sacred or outright stealing ideas and taking credit for them, and this doesn't fall into either of those categories.
and i don't know, i didn't look anything up or anything, it's just that in my experience gay people are treated much, much worse than black people if people know they're gay. maybe that just applies where i live, but black people here face things like stereotypes while gay people get things that are a lot worse, like job discrimination, bullying, and being treated like way less than people.

OKAY
I agree that white males, gay or straight, should not appropriate culture and black female personalities. Bottom line.
But your arguments got messy. It is FOOLISH to tell us to check our privilege because there are MANY of us who CANNOT hide our gayness. We are naturally flamboyant and feminine. That's why we get bullied, attacked and commit suicide... because we cannot hide it even when we DENY it because homophobes won't let gender roles go.
I was bullied all the way from middle school to high school because I wasn't macho or athletic... I was feminine and liked theatre. And how dare anyone tell me I should pretend to be anything other than what I am.
A feminine gay man can't "hide" his gayness. If he tries to talk deep and "macho" -like... he will sound like an idiot and it will be obvious.
I would never tell a black person to bleach their skin and get a nose job... because that's racist. telling a feminine gay man to act like a "man" is misogynistic and homophobic. Gender roles are superficial and fake.
So please... for the love of EQUALITY, stop demeaning the amount of oppression and inequality other minorities face as well. It's not a competition.
Again, I agree with your main point... but those arguments are ignorant as hell.

White gays who try to act 'ghetto' and do the whole 'I'm a strong, black, independent woman who don't need no man' routine are so cringeworthy
Gather them Time!

I really don't understand what she's trying to say. I wish she would it better, cause I'm confused. As I read it, all I'm seeing that she's saying "ratchet, ghetto, etc" are traits that black women have (which is a negative stereotype). Plus, you have to take into account...not every white male is "laughing" or "mocking" those traits. Some men are just feminine, flamboyant, act that way naturally. and can't hide their sexuality, so it was ignorant of her to even assume that.
In a way, I sort of understand what she's saying, but at the same time, her post sort of comes off a bit offensive. That's just my opinion.
I'm indifferent on the entire article.

TIME is so so so so so wrong.
Listen, these great United States of America are a multi-culturual mosaic if beautiful peoples of all different backgrounds. We mix and mingle and share. We unite not through race, but through our national pride as a united people. My point is, people are going to appropriate other cultures here in the US.
I am latino and I seethe when I hear non-latino (both white and black) people butcher my beautiful spanish, but I understand that it only means that I am accepted here by my peers. My culture is appreciated.
TIME magazine can have a seat.

Honestly, I'm from the UK and we don't have this issue over here. When I first started looking at websites like ATRL or Tumblr it always baffled me why people in 2014 were still so fixated on segregation.
