I've played it, it's the only Sims 2 game I have for Mac so I still play it to this day when I need my Sims 2 fix
It's fun but the stories weren't long enough. I finished one in less than 2 hours

Yes! There's a neighborhood that you can do free play or you can do whatever you want with the sims that had a story. But there's really not much to do. It's kinda like having just the base game and no expansions so it gets boring lol.
The thing is loading screen on the base game can pretty much work smoothly. But on the long run, with expansion packs, object collections and custom content, it'll be the pits.
