Apple made the iPhone 5 to compete with Galaxy devices which were bragging with bigger screens. They were basically startled whn they saw the S2 being a hit.
The S3 mini is a lower spec version of the S3. Like when they did the S2 mini. What's hard to understand?
Mini means small thus the smaller screen

Please don't go there Mr.
& no. If Apple wanted to compete with the Galaxy devices they would have gone the same size then and there. Apple increased the size to 4" so it would be a "true 16:9" display. That's the only reason.
Apple's smaller screen caused the 4s to be the best selling smartphone of that year. Why would they jump to a larger 4.5"+ screen if they were already outselling bigger phones after the iPhone 4s
They already said in Sep 2012 that support for the S2 Mini was dropped and that the Jelly Bean update was dropped with it. Suddenly they go back 180 and announce the S3 mini.
Why on Earth would they discontinue support on a product, to only support another of the same, unless someone else was seeing success.
Samsung only dropped support because they believed people weren't here for smaller phones due to the poor sales. They wouldn't drop support on a successful product, nor would they repeat a flop product without incentive to do so.
