i just took a look at selena's discography and she didnt really smash so much? she was really on a specific demographic type of artist. the latin american community ywas all over her but Aaliyah was really international.

As much I love to ruin Aaliyah's legacy, she was a huge thing in the 90's. She had so many hits. If you meant crossover, she still had a big crossover hit in 1998, which is arguably her most iconic and memorable single: Are You That Somebody?.
Anyway, the answer is both. Selena is hugely revered in the Spanish community, the same way Aaliyah is revered in the Spanish community.
But I still voted Selena cause she can sing better and is more talented
