As much I love to ruin Aaliyah's legacy, she was a huge thing in the 90's. She had so many hits. If you meant crossover, she still had a big crossover hit in 1998, which is arguably her most iconic and memorable single: Are You That Somebody?.

Anyway, the answer is both. Selena is hugely revered in the Spanish community, the same way Aaliyah is revered in the Spanish community.

But I still voted Selena cause she can sing better and is more talented

Most of you here don't even do your research, you're just going off of todays her death anniversary and most of all of us know her movie.

Aaliyah had more hits and sales overall. Selena seems to of only had one number 1 hit. And it was in the US latin charts. I don't see records of her anywhere in Latin America.

ALSO the madonna of Mexico is gloria trevi boo.

There were far bigger mexican latina stars before and even after selena. She was helping latinas break through in America and in a way due to her death, Jennifer Lopez did just that

EDIT: Well I didn't notice it said 90's. Well I guess selena,but ONLY due to her movie boost. Aaliyah only had two albums then. Her self titled which put her more worldwide and way in the lead wasn't until 2001.

i just took a look at selena's discography and she didnt really smash so much? she was really on a specific demographic type of artist. the latin american community ywas all over her but Aaliyah was really international.

I knew about Selena before I knew about Aaliyah but I live in Texas so maybe that's why. But Selena was a force to be reckoned with no one could touch her. Aaliyah is my baby girl forever though. They're both flawless.
