How can you be sure he was even aware of the controversy ? He lives in the UK, not the US.
Not to mention, by your reasoning, you shouldn't be allowed to praise a book if a writer has some controversial views, same thing for movies. Does saying Leni Riefenstahl was a great film director make me a nazi ? Of course not.
