Because I'm begging her image to be light like it was during AFY.

I want urban, dance janet with classy sexy songs. To me, light is mostly ballads with simple music etc. But I want some AFY vibe like you do so maybe my definition of light is wrong haha

Oh, that makes sense. I thought you arbitrarily chose an album cover to use.
The fan-made 20 YO covers are the PITS. Like those were the best 4 submissions?

Haha but in 2006, they were KIND OF decent. Except for the last one, but I bet Janet loved it lol it's so her...
The blue one was made by a fan which went by Alladin. I like it! Reminds me of Control, which was the supposed purpose of the album.
The second one is nice too! 00's Janet with the 80's Janet on the t-shirt. Never had noticed that.

She is serving "I make sex in a warehouse". Typical Janet.
She looks cute though. But then again - NOTHING light about that cover. I look at it and feel threatened by her sex drive.

When I say light, I mean lyrically speaking. I honestly could care less about her image next era. As long as the music is there. For the past 3 albums she's had absolutely nothing to talk about it even though major things happened (super bowl, her brother and her portrayal in the media at the time) so we've gotten the same repetitive themes with each album. I want a heavy album. I mean what does she have to lose? Truthfully speaking, the bar if very low for her at this point given the mediocrity of her last few albums. That's why I say Janet is in one of the best positions of any artist right now. She's already an established legend who has honestly already peaked commercially so there isn't any pressure on that front for her. Secondly, given how "light" her previous works were and the things that have transpired in the last few years of her personal life; she's given herself leg room to really divulge in her work. We never really got the proper follow-up to Velvet Rope. In "Special" she ended it with "work in progress" After that it's as if we never got the continuation of her spiritual journey. "Better Days" was a stepping stone but wasn't enough. It's like she went from "watering her spiritual garden" to sex, sex and more sex. That's one of the main criticisms of her later work. It's not that her later albums are bad, it's just she set her own bar so high that she had to stay there, instead she regressed with sexual themes. I've seen journalists compare Velvet Rope to "Blue" by Joni Mitchell which is a huge honor. She was just expected to deliver of that caliber with subsequent albums and she really hasn't. So with the next album I want her to pick up where she left off on her spiritual journey.

I LOVE it.
The weirdness highlights the theme of the album. I love the lightning, the cold colors, how dirty, vulnerable and drag queen-esque she looks.
Let's talk about this random sh** tho...
She looks beautiful because she IS beautiful, but overall... I'm not even hating on the 80s typography, but the colors, the pose... for what? Must be her least interesting album cover. Not to mention the fact that the album concept (a pretty ridiculous concept at first place) was poorly handled as well. I bop to several tracks, but I must confess 20 YO is probably her most (if not the only) unnecessary body of work.

Yes yes yes. I love Damita Jo and Discipline, but - as real fans - we need to be honest and to admit that her previous albums were MOMENTS, so much more than great productions and sassy instrumentals put together. We will always have the looks, videos and irresistible choreographies simply because that's her essence, but the extra factor needs to be there too.
I'm not sure if I get it, but I guess you kind of dismiss the relevancy of AFY? I disagree. At the moment, the freshness of it made sense. It was like a summer breeze, a refreshing touch on her image. It was a still young and vivid Janet Jackson; a Janet Jackson that was always updated with the changes on the music industry and technologies overall. You Ain't Right, Son of a Gun, Trust A Try are a few examples of her never ending bold and pushing sense of creativity.

I actually completely agree with this. As long as she puts her heart and soul into it and is heavily involved with songwriting, arranging, conceptualizing, ect. then I think this could be her best album since All For You.

I love AFY and I see what you mean, but I'm speaking on a deeper level. Yes she addressed things of her personal life, but she hasn't really bared her soul since Velvet Rope. She spoke about sensitive subjects in Velvet Rope, one being self-identity and her struggles with it. I want a follow up to that Janet. I mean besides the mess with Rene and Tina what else deep did she really discuss on AFY? The good news is I feel she will with this next album. The book True You talked about her journey with self-identity. That's what I want from her, just in musical form. She's been on that "True You" kick for years now so I have a strong feeling that philosophy will translate into musical greatness. Quite exciting actually.
