I can see the logic in that (even though The Smash of Glory was staring them right in the face). They thought they had BR 2.0 on their hands, thought they'd get an easy hit after so many consecutive smashes and totally underestimated the lyrical backlash.
Like...THIS is the track they felt was the best choice? The most logical? The one that would build on Applause? The one that would sell the album? The single that would "save" the campaign?
I guess Gaga has a lot more power than I thought. She wrote and produced a last minute glam song about space sex and they were like "Yeah, sure. Go for it. There's nothing else on the album that would make a more sensible second single."

Exactly. All things considered, "Judas" absolutely looked like the right choice at the time.
But Gaga/Interscope thinking that releasing this would be the right 2nd single is just insane. It would have likely stopped the ARTPOP era in its tracks.
