Huh?

People still wanted to buy physical singles back then. If anything, the album was the waste of money and people preferred the cheaper single. But there came a point where they had no choice, because record companies stopped making them or shipping limited amounts (which is why they couldn't go platinum). And the price to track ratio for a single/maxi single was the same as an album anyway. (1-2 tracks for 1.99-2.49 and 4--6+ tracks for 4.99-5.49+)

5 million people may be willing to part with their money (or don't know any better) but tons more people are willing to get it for free.
