I played mainly over Wi-Fi so I haven't tried any literally online (like with a PC) battling, but as I understand it that's where a lot of the metagame is shifting now. Well if you did go to Pokemon Online, in the team builder, they have a little thing where they give you the max EV number, and you can just spread it wherever you want in seconds just by sliding a bar to the right per stat. And they still will ban certain abilities from certain tiers (the only banned ability period is Moody for obvious reasons), but that's because you have access to them. In the team builder, you can choose the gender of your pokemon, shiny or not, EV's, moveset, nicknames, pretty much everything.
