It's about looking white. Sadly in the majority of places in the world the whiter a woman looks the prettier she is considered, this goes for caucasian physical features as well such as thin noses, light hair and small lips. The girls who go to tanning saloons just want to look like they've been under the sun but they don't actually want to look or be like a black person, let's be real now.

The general public disagrees, seeing that all the songs I mentioned went #1 and had enormous views for their time (with the exception of the flagged S&M music video)...

I don't know how trendsetting wouldn't be relevant to the discussion, seeing that people actually want to look like Rihanna. There's a reason VH1, Complex, Esquire, GQ, and AskMen stan for Rihanna's beauty.
I don't think some of you know what the "beauty standard" is especially in the united states... Exotic women (Sofia V. for example) are fetishized, while the white "all american" look is the standard concept of beauty for people... It's gross but true. They also LOOOOOVE when white women have *exotic features* such as Angelina Jolie being praised for her lips.
Sis, she looks ugly in all of these except for the last one where she looks decent.
I don't think Britney was ugly in her prime but she was never this spectacular beauty. She falls kind of flat in the looks department tbh, there's nothing unique about her beauty. Rihanna on the other hand has a very unique look, her eyes are gorgeous, she has a great body, etc.

Are you familiar with colonialism? Yes it ended (one could argue it hasn't but whatever) but we still live with the effects of white Europe having imposed it's values on the rest of the world. Why do you think most of the women on runways and beauty pageants have facial features as close to white people as possible if they're not white, why do you think most movie stars are white, why do you think most of the CEOs of the world's biggest companies are white, why do you think most important figures taught in world history are white (men), why do you think Jesus is portrayed as being white even though he was probably closer to being black? Why do you think the skin lightening industry is a billion dollar industry in countries like India? Why do you think most pop stars are white and if they're not, they're light skinned?
I've never really thought of Britney as necessarily "beautiful." That's just not her look. She was definitely at one point one of the hottest women on the planet though.
I think when styled correctly, Rihanna has one of the most gorgeous faces out there. Her nose job was so subtle and did wonders.
