The definition of "pop star" is really subjective; your definition is apparently much wider than my own, whereas I personally limit it to mainstream artists. Under my definition Adele doesn't quite fit, as her music is not very mainstream.

I definitely agree that my definition of the term is a bit more broad. Let's make it less broad and include only pop artists, artists that perform traditional pop music. Adele still fits that description.
Wait a second...

Maybe the music is not made with the INTENTION of doing all of the things Best One Yet mentioned, but...Adele? Not mainstream? Adele did ALL of the things Best One Yet mentioned. Three #1 hits (which all smashed on the radio), and a fourth that did very well...VMA, Grammy and many, many, MANY other award nominations...not to mention the album success. She even had a popular TV special. How is this not mainstream?
This is why the comparisons to Norah Jones and Susan Boyle are so misguided. Norah Jones and Susan Boyle did not have the singles success that Adele has had, and that is a fact.

Rihanna's TTT doesn't have great album sales, other singles flopped besides WFL and WHYB ..Gaga's btw outsold rihanna and katy's last albums.I think some fans here forget that they're faves have plenty of flop singles ,and forget that BTW and EOG were huge hits worldwide, and they STILL talk about marry the night .and both of them will never come close to gaga's current tour receipts. So clearly the answer is Gaga
and gaga is on her damn blackout, and she's still talked more then any pop star.if that's not enough proof then idk

Yes, but to call Katy the center of the world??
And besides, she's not completely nothing in US and Latin America. Plus, she is STILL huge in Asia, Australia, Africa, and Europe.

But tbh, I don't think it's Gaga rite now. I think it's Rihanna

I don't understand why Little Monsters vote for her for every single poll even though clearly, she shouldn't win this one. Pure delusion.

According to your logic, Carly Rae Jepsen, Maroon 5, Gotye and One Direction are the biggest acts in the United States

A song doesn't have to be mainstream to obtain success; you can call "Someone Like You" mainstream and "Set Fire to the Rain" perhaps to a greater extent, but you won't hear anything else like "Rolling in the Deep" or "Rumour Has It" on Top 40 radio. Her music is different from anything else currently gaining success. As we saw in 2008-2009, songs outside the mainstream becoming successful can influence the mainstream to shift toward that direction, but as it stands the mainstream is still very dance and hip-hop oriented, rather than the sort of soul-pop Adele makes. Her ballads like "Someone Like You" and "Turning Tables" are more mainstream than anything else she does.

Yes but if ADELE decides to try a new genre a do something different people will call her a sellout, that's why i think she isn't considered a popstar. When i think about popstars, i think about artists who work for the entertainment, and make music for the people, if that means try electro, hip hop, country or whatever is selling records they will do it.

I don't see you rebutting my arguments... It's a little offensive to be referred to as "that lonely monster [with a different opinion]".

Well, while I agree that Adele's success is kind of an anomaly, by becoming a big hit, a song that may not have been mainstream-oriented becomes mainstream. That's the nature of the business. "Somebody That I Used To Know" isn't really a normal mainstream song, especially in today's music climate, but its success made the song a mainstream song. "Rolling in the Deep" is still unlike anything on the radio even now, but it was undoubtedly one of the most popular songs of last year, if not the most popular, depending on what you feel about the success of "Party Rock Anthem" or "We Found Love". So I guess that Adele is mainstream without being the normal definition of "mainstream" in music currently. She's not a "pop star" in the traditional sense that you are alluding to, but her album and single sales, as well as her successful tours and her many award nominations, suggest that she is a more atypical pop star.

Unless she tried to do something DRASTICALLY different (like, say, hip hop or dance), I can't see how she would ever be a sellout. Her music is already mainstream, already for the people at large.

Leaving out Adele or Bieber, because they would effectively be controversial choices, we have:
Rihanna: strong album sales with Loud, sold half of that with Talk That Talk. 'We Found Love' was a huge smash but all of her following singles failed to match that and the over-hyped 'Where Have You Been' is quite struggling on iTunes despite massive promo and radio play. She's a strong touring artist, and one of the top social media artists.
Katy Perry: the only one who may still have to peak. Her album sales are often underestimated, but, after all, five million looks underwhelming when you count her eight singles and the tons of promo extended over more than two years. Her US singles stats are mind-blowing, but only a part of her singles had a similar worldwide resonance. She's a strong social media artist and currently a weak touring artist.
Lady Gaga (my pick): she lost part of her digital power in the US, but she still manages to get worldwide smashes: 'Born This Way' has, according to the only official source, IFPI, sold 8.2 million, which is more than any Teenage Dream single, despite not even topping the 4 million mark in the US. Her latest album, Born This Way, outsold the latest releases of any of the people listed in the poll and hasn't been re-released: it is currently enjoying a noticeable sales boost thanks to the tour. Her tour is on track to become one of the top10 most-successful of all-time, and her average gross (~2.7M) is three times the one of her closer competition among the other two (Rihanna) and more than five times Katy's. According to starcount, she still is the most popular social media presence and gets headlines despite being officially on a media break. Protests around the globe show her impact. She is a respected and award-winning songwriter, musician, singer, activist and fashion icon, something the other two still can't say.

Considering it's Gaga's second least successful single worldwide off her last era and isn't radio-friendly.
Rihanna had 3 underperforming singles off the TT era so your logic doesn't work here
Gaga still sold more albums worldwide and had huge tour demand in Asia, Oceania, Latin America is BEGGING for tour dates and most of her concerts in Europe are sold out

GaGa is not the biggest popstar at the moment. Her last #1 single was over a year ago, and the only reason she has been in the press recently is because of the controversy surrounding her tour.
Adele is the current big seller, but she is also not the biggest pop star out at the moment. The Rolling In The Deep fad has passed, her album is finally slowing down sales-wise, and she hasn't been in the press lately.
The biggest popstar is between Katy Perry and Justin Bieber. "Boyfriend" peaked and #2, and his album is getting a lot of buzz. Katy Perry has highly anticipated movie coming out, Wide Awake is climbing up the charts, all her singles from her last album are Top 10 hits, all but 1 going #1, and she is everywhere in the press.

I think I see what you're getting at; that by being so successful, it can be considered to have become mainstream. That makes sense with your broader definition. I suppose a distinction between Adele and more traditional pop stars should be made in other discussions while noting that she can still be considered a pop star, just not in the traditional sense, which I prefer to use. Probably just because I'm more used to the traditional connotation of the term "pop star".

Gaga is in the press because the media follows her every move. There are many tour reviews from many different countries. She isn't the queen of social media just because of "tour controversey". Every time she tweets there are at least 10 articles on it, and when she tweets a picture there are 20.
Bieber is considered to be the "biggest popstar" because a #2 peaking single? And album "buzz"?????? Please.
