Ugh, some people don't seem to have reading skills. The questions says at the moment. I think we can all agree that in the last 5 years, GaGa is the biggest one, but at the moment, Katy takes the gold home.

I'd say Adele and then Gaga. The tour may be an indicator of which star is big but it's not all, after all only like 1-3 million of ppl attend to the shows out of the 7 billion that make up the world's population.

Let's just look beyond the actual topic argument for a second and address something that is really bothering me...can someone please tell me how Adele is not a pop star? She's not the prototypical pop star that Katy Perry and Gaga are, but that doesn't mean that she's not a different kind of pop star, one that's creating a new mold of pop star that others will undoubtedly try to follow (and already are, to an extent).
I'm sorry, I just don't understand how people can argue that Adele is not a "popstar", not when she performs pop music, is just about the most popular artist performing pop music right now, and sells more combined singles and albums than anyone else on the planet.

Rihanna and Katy Perry are the biggest pop stars at the moment in the United States, but Gaga is bigger worldwide right now.
Katy Perry is obviously strong chart-wise but if we needed to talk about singles, Carly Rae Jepsen would be the biggest popstar in the whole fuc*ing universe.
Rihanna is also strong because she's being talked about a lot and has got a lot of attention, but again, that's because they've got singles, movies, specials and more material to promote them in the US, Gaga doesn't.

We were discussing at first why i don't think Katy is the biggest popstar AT THE MOMENT, and then you went and brought Britney into it.

If i think Katy has more hits than Britney there's no reason to say "Educate Yourself".

You can't 'THINK' katy has scored more hits than Britney when it's simply not true. It's a FACT that she doesn't.
And i can say 'educate yourself' if i feel like it because clearly you need to.

No, I just didn't want to have to argue with the blatant ignorance in his/her post.
Also, #1 singles are something to brag about (referring to your last post). It's not my fault she tied your fave for most #1's from an album.
Take many, many seats.

I honestly don't see Adele as a pop star at all - she's very popular, but I think "pop star" implies the sort of thing you get with Madonna, or Michael Jackson, or Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. The type of artist who specializes in the mainstream and attention grabbing videos and style, who go on big world tours and such. Adele doesn't fit in with the other people we currently consider "pop stars", she fits more with artists like Amy Winehouse; I wouldn't necessarily call Amy a pop star.

She was scared for 6th single... because all the flop..
and Adele is far far far away.... the last time that we saw her was at Brit awards, five months ago...
Katy is right now the CENTER OF THE WORLD..

DELUSION
The Edge of Glory was a massive hit worldwide.
Latin America is BEGGING for BTWBall Tour Dates, specially Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico, I can tell, I live here, I've seen it. And I don't think outselling stadiums in places your fave could only dream of perform at = being a flop.

Education has nothing to do with discussing who is the biggest popstar, even if you think so. You were being rude but you failed, you said Kats were using promotion as an excuse but it's a FACT Katy only promoted WA once and is smashing, while for example, Gaga promoted MTN more and it flopped. But i won't tell you 'Educate Yourself', i don't care that much.
And it's funny, because Britney stans use the promotion excuses all the time.

That's the prototypical pop star definition that I was referring to. My argument is that the term "pop star" is not limited to one definition. There may be a more universally accepted definition, but what about artists like Kelly Clarkson, who are clearly popular and more of a typical pop star than, say, Adele, but are not necessarily video artists in the vein of MJ and Gaga? I think that it's unfair to say that only a few certain artists who do specific things can be "pop stars", when there are so many artists who don't quite fit the same bill but are equally as popular or close to it.
In the general sense, pop stars are artists that are very popular all over the world, artists that even Grandma Jo and Andy ILiveUnderARockman will know, artists who sell a ton of albums and/or singles...and Adele definitely fits that description.

at some people actually thinking GaGa's still the top bitch.
Her singles can't even crack the Top 20 in most major markets nowadays.
Get out of 2009, people.

It's Adele > Rihanna > Katy Perry.

I think there's also a different intention, i think ADELE is a popular artist who is selling millions right now, just like Norah Jones was selling million ten years ago, but their music is not made in order to be Top 40 hits, smash on Radio and had Top 10 singles and VMA's nominations. It happens that people is enjoying that kind of music right now and giving them more exposure.
You can see Madonna or Britney reinventing themselves, working with new producers, making more generic music in order to appeal to the general public, i don't see ADELE working on a new album in ten years and calling Will.i.am for a Top 10 hit.

But if you broaden your definition of "pop star" that much, you'll end up including people who specialize in genres that are almost always treated as distinct from "pop" music; if you only use "popularity" for the word "pop", as used to be more common, then artists like Garth Brooks and and other country and rock solo artists would fit the definitions. The definition of "pop star" is really subjective; your definition is apparently much wider than my own, whereas I personally limit it to mainstream artists. Under my definition Adele doesn't quite fit, as her music is not very mainstream.
