Okay, first of all, nobody said anything about the ocean floor. The whole point is that they'd be humanoid and capable of escaping humanity. Secondly, as time progresses they would develop some kind of mechanism to stop this from happening once they delve deeper into the ocean floor-- assuming that they do.

Ugh. I don't think you understand what biologically possible means. It is hypothetically possible for humans to start developing six fingers. This could happen anatomically, given the theory of evolution. What requires evidence is the actual proof of Mermaids existence, and I'm not arguing that.

Evolution isn't a certainty. So many different species have gone extinct because of their inability to adapt in the first place, so I think you're putting a little too much emphasis on the idea that these "merfolk" would develop an incredibly thick hide to withstand the pressure and the frigid cold, not to mention eyes capable of seeing in the complete and total blackness.
