Let me tell a little story here. My prom night we went to this nice expensive restaurant on the beach. We had a reservation but moved it which was fine. We got there and no one was there to greet us or take us to our table, we had to find our friends ourselves. Once we sat down, the waitress took 20 min to take our drink orders, about 45 min for apps, an hour and a half for entree and another hour for desert. Through the entire time she's rolling her eyes at simple little requests like can you close the blinds a little and can you ask and see if the ac could be turned on because it's hot. She then proceeded to be snappy while taking orders for the food, slammed plates and glasses down on the table, just plain rude for no reason. We spent 4 hours of our prom night with that.
Now tell me, would you tip her?
Mind you since it's an "upscale" restaurant there's already about 30% gratuity added to your check.

Of course it is. This question is an uneducated question.

I run on a budget so to that extent I am not able to tip as much as I would like to but I most certainly thing it's hurtful to not leave a tip. Servers usually do their best (emphasis on usually), so tipping should come more naturally. Often how you treat and tip your servers determine how you are as a person and in that case RomanNavy never tipping shows a lot of who he/she is in reality.

Absolutely. 20% is the norm. at all these "no" votes or people who say that they only tip 0-10% because they "can't afford it" because they chose to go to med school or don't know how to budget properly.

I always tip if the service is good. However, I don't feel bad about not tipping if the service is bad. Waiters get compensation up to minimum wage if they report tips less than that. So, if you're a snotty bitch, then sorry I won't tip. But if you do your job like a normal person, I'll tip 15-25%.

In a case like that, I would of left like 50 cents and a note telling her next time to not take out her emotional problems on the people that pay for her living expenses or something like that.

I only do it when I feel like it. It's extremely pretentious of a server to expect any kind of tip. A tip is a gesture of the costumer, not an obligation of any sort.
In fact those should be included in their wage and if they don't like the low salary they might aswell look for another job.

Extremely rude.
On a related note, a restaurant I went to last night doesn't accept tips, but the waiters get other benefits instead like health coverage and a higher paycheck. Interesting method, although I don't agree. Apparently most restaurants in Europe don't even accept tips.

Not all waiters tho, I think its a different situation, and also the amount of effort invested is a lot different.

Yes. They work hard and many of them are trying to make ends meet.

Umm....what? Everyone goes out to eat before prom. There's nothing there but hors d'oeuvre's. It's a damn public school.

I always tip, but I don't like to do it. I think it's a lame excuse that employers use to give awful salaries to their employees.

No that's not common. I mean, we had that stuff at the after prom party but not at the actual prom. The only reason it's at the after prom instead of prom is because everyone usually eats dinner at like 7 or 8 then spend like 4 hours dancing then go to after prom which is from 1 till 6am.

I feel like you're being contradictory.
A server should have a tip included in their wage but it's pretentious for the server to expect a tip?
And also if they don't like the low salary they might look for another job? Don't waiters and servers at moderately busy restaurants make more than minimum wage because people are usually generous enough and thankful enough for good service to give them a tip?

I think it's extremely rude not to leave a tip. I may be a tad biased though, I'm a waiter.
Like some people are saying; the pay sucks. I think I'm making around $3/hour right now and I've gotten like 2 raises since I started. BUT whenever I get to work good nights (usually weekends) I'll walk out with $200 - $300 so I basically live off of tips.

I think so, if you can afford to eat out then you can afford to give at least a 15% tip regardless of whether you got good service or not.

If a server is bad, leave them a bad tip. Like 10% by all means if they are bad, do so. But come on, that is how they make their living.

I am very generous when waiters are exceptional. I do have the money when I go out to eat, but I won't dish out money just because it's required of me to do so. Work for it.
