This thread will be even more interesting when the album is actually released.

I think that Gaga did plan most of this out. One fan on Gaga Daily had the username ArtPop for years and I asked him where he got that from and he said that he saw it in a Gaga interview from 2008. That leads me to believe that she HAS planned this out. She even said that she was expecting to TEST her fans this era and see which fans would stick by her and which fans would leave, so she DID expect backlash from the BTW Era and an era that was significantly less successful than the previous one.
Whose to say all of this wasn't planned? I think it was. Seems rational to me, ESPECIALLY after reading the OP.

I know she definitely expected backlash from BTW but I'm not gonna go so far as to speculate about how long she's planned an ARTPOP era. All I know is that the ideas have been around a while, so all the "this is so pretentious, I wish she'd go back to how she was before!" stuff is ridiculous

Really it just comes down to people giving her a chance. Smart, deep art does exist. Her whole existence is about proving that it can exist in the pop music sphere too, not just in paintings meant for galleries.

I think it's just a hit to people's ego if they don't understand something a popstar is doing. They just reject anything she does/says to make themselves feel better because she's "obviously" the one who doesn't know what she's talking about, not the other way around. If you approach something anybody (not limited to Gaga) does with an open mind, you will be surprised more often than not. If you go in deciding you are going to hate it, you actually are just going to hate it. Give it a chance

I think you're exactly right. People are weirded out by and HATE the idea that Gaga has a deeper meaning to her art, so they try to discredit it and say it's not there and they mock her fans for engaging with the work.
It's amazing how the word 'artist' gets thrown around this site in reference to label-controlled puppets who burp out whatever lyrics are handed to them by their songwriters, but when someone actually wants to live up to the "art" part of the word, they're written off as "pretentious" and are somehow less-than.

Nice post OP. If people think she's pretentious it's because they have low expectations of their pop singers. Gaga has a hand in every aspect of her work and writes her songs, she deserves the term "artist" and the right to use it. I'd prefer she be "pretentious" and hold herself to a higher standard than be satisfied with generic hits written by songwriting teams, and leaving all decisions about fashion and videos to others. Gaga holds herself to a higher standard than nearly any other pop star, it's sad that too many people want just another generic puppet "artist." We have a real artist in the pop world, appreciate her.

I just cant see that. Shes just clearly inspired since the beginning, thats all. I know monsters are reaching but you and other haters are reaching too, to discredit her.

This might be like the anti-BTW artistically. BTW was grungier and dark, ARTPOP, so far, seems poppy and fun.
She seems to make her albums fraternal. The Fame vs. The Fame Monster. and now Born This Way vs. ARTPOP, maybe?
I know this has nothing to do with the OP, but I think that is interesting.

THANK YOU! I've always laughed at the people who drag the Gaga fan-base down just because they watch a video, listen to the song and the lyrics, and actually get something out of it other than a fun beat to dance to. What?! A fan-base that THINKS?! BLASPHEMY! God forbid an artist releases music that actually has meaning and is somehow related to their lives! What a ridiculous concept! God forbid an artist starts a website where she can be better connected with her fans and even chat with them one-on-one! WTF?! God forbid an artist gets political, stands up for a cause, and starts a non-profit organization to help better society! That's just outrageous!
But I digress....
Most of what she does is a complete breakdown of the music artist "norm", and people for whatever reason feel threatened by it! I, for one, think she gives pop culture a little pizazz and us pop culture fanatics, something to talk about. Where's the harm in that? By the way, great read Twai. I tip my hat to you.

You are one of the very few people in Gaga's fanbase that are not dumb.

This makes want to cry because I've been reading books like "The Philosophy of Warhol" and "The Warhol Sixties" for the past couple of weeks and the artistic direction and production that will go into this era will be absolutely amazing.
I'm all in.

That's certainly a possibility, but you'd be very-narrow minded if you actually think that's the only possibility.
I, for one, think that her delivery is EXTREMELY weak more often than not. Really? Who the **** is gonna believe that a song like Telephone is about "fear of suffocation" or wearing a meat on your body = "we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones"? For someone who always wants to incorporate "deep themes" into her image/music, she certainly does it in the most superficial, unconvincing way (ooooh, she's deconstructing pop art so she's reversed the two words, Fuuuuuun :special .
I'm not sure why you guys are so adamant on shoving the "PEOPLE DON'T GET WHAT SHE DUZ = PEOPLE IZ STOOPID" routine like it's a fact, it's such a turn off, even though I really enjoyed your OP.
