Aaliyah Biopic Update from Keshia Chante
Canadian R&B Singer Speaks On Aaliyah Movie

It’s been about five years since news first broke that there would be a movie about the life of late R&B singer Aaliyah Haughton. The actress/dancer/singer first thought to play the role was Destiny Lightsy previously featured in You Got Served, Fat Albert, Rize, and various music videos for Christina Aguilera and Chris Brown. Pictures of Lightsy in styles made famous by Aaliyah surfaced, later revealed to be audition snapshots.
Another actress in consideration for the role is Meagan Good. In an April 2011 interview with FreddyO.com, Good states, “It’s something that I really wanna do. I’ve spoken with some of her family and…from my understanding, it’s not something [they] plan on doing any time soon. It’s still a very delicate subject for the family…”
But the role is reported to have been filled by director Bill Condon (director behind Dreamgirls), who chose 23-year old Keshia Chante, Canadian-born R&B singer and former girlfriend of rapper Drake. Chante’s ability to sing and dance and her uncanny resemblance to Aaliyah seem like a match. The film has an impressive $80 million budget and a legion of hungry fans who are awaiting more information on the project.
Recently in February of this year, Keshia Chante opened up about the progress of the movie production in an interview with Chris Yandek at CYInterview.com:
“And from my understanding, there are people trying to create a movie and Aaliyah’s family are still mourning her loss and aren’t ready to share her story and create a film. So there’s a bit of back and forth thing with her family and with creative people. And I know that they would bless a movie being created, they’re just not 100 percent comfortable and unfortunately from my understanding they don’t have complete control of her estate. So a movie could technically be made without them green lighting it and I kind of think that’s unfortunate. So I want her family to be on board and to be happy with it. It’s still kind of lingering in the air.”
Ms.Chante goes on to explain even further why the production has stalled:
“And for me, I’ve always wanted to kind of talk about it, it’s just really, it’s uncomfortable. I don’t want to disrespect her family. I know that they’re, they don’t like it. They don’t like when they get calls from people, like, ‘Oh, I heard this about your daughter. I heard this.’ Because it’s painful for them. So I know that the lawyer and even them and even my team who have kind of like you know, it’s happy, it’s better for everyone to not really speak on it and I’m just feel like you know, I’m not supposed to speak on it, but I know in this situation, yeah, it’ kind of, it’s a long time coming and I know people really want to know what’s going on. So yeah, I definitely think this was the perfect time to tell you.”

Sounds like a lot of creative people want to film an Aaliyah biopic, but her family isn't here for it and Keshia is kind of stuck in the middle. Would you like to see this movie filmed and released? When do you think the family will be ready?
YES, I want this damn movie. But if the Haughton family isn't ready for it even after 10 years without their daughter, I don't think they'll ever be ready.
Thoughts?

I don't think a family will ever get over loosing their sister or daughter. They say time heals all wounds but somethings just hit too hard.

Her family drives nuts for some reason. They quickly shot down any hope of new unreleased music this year, and they don't even support the biopic. It's like they feel like their mad or something. This biopic would be ammmazzzing.

They are still mourning her loss. They are not ready for anything like that yet. It's hard for them to even answer questions about what Aaliyah was like.

I don't think it will happen.
If they're not comfortable with it now after 10 years, then I don't think they will ever be.

I know that I'm one of those people who really want to see an Aaliyah Biopic but at the same time there should be respect for her family for not being ready yet ,so I agree with Keshia.

I kinda knew this was going to happen.
I can see why it'd be hard for them.
She died at 22, in a plane crash, rushing to see them.
But they got 22 years. We got 7 years of mystery between 3 albums. And I Care 4 U.
THEN everything else that comes w/ her death.
Like, we need something new. I mean, remix some of Aaliyah's old unreleased tracks or something.

All I know is, I'm ready to watch this whenever it can be put together. I adored her and although it hurts, her story needs to be told.

I think they might reconsider in the future. Anything is possible.

i hope they consider in the future... but given how long it's been... it almost seems like they blame the industry for her death. i understand she was precious to them, and they really knew her and cherished her, but we need to remember her as well.

Considering the nature of her death, it is to be blamed for. I understand why they would be angry at the industry, or at least the record label.

the nature of her death was that she and other people got into a small plane that had far too much stuff in it. i don't know whose call it was to ok the takeoff, but the industry is not a person... so to blame the industry or a label is odd. maybe they should do a documentary instead so they can share their memories of her with us. the fans lost her too, and we didn't know her personally, but we still cherished her.

How's a plane crash associated with the music industry/her label?
And I feel like I've read this before. I don't think it will happen.

It's not the industry's fault that she died. They over-loaded a small plane. They were supposed to leave in a bigger, stronger plane the next day, but they were tired and anxious to get back to America. At least one of the passengers was warned. They did not listen. For the person who was told that their plane was a weak, bitch plane, their death was their own fault. For those who had no idea, they were rushing in the wrong place at the wrong time.
