Disney is pulling a dangerous, yet, exciting move...
I'm not sure if you guys were paying attention to this at all, but about two months ago, Disney released a statement saying they were gong to test the Blu-Ray market share by releasing Pirates 4 in 3D / 2D on Blu-Ray a MONTH before the DVD comes out.
If you wanted to pick up your Pirates 4 last Tuesday you probably noticed, there were no DVDs. I didn't actually really look for the DVDs, but I did go to the Best Buy site and it says "Pre-Order" for 11/15.
Disney decided to pull this move because they wanted to see how well the Hi-Defintion market is really going.
With the release of The Lion King and The Fast Five last Tuesday, Blu-Ray keeps smashing records at an all time high and it's not going to be any different with Pirates. Next Tuesday we should be seeing some impressive numbers for Pirates, since there is no DVD sales (unless you get the combo pack with the Blu-Ray).
Blu-Ray.com says DVD's are at an all time low and they say by 2015, DVD's should be in the minority while Blu-Ray is the main default of home entertainment.
Disney is smart. I think they should start doing this with every movie. Release the DVD a month after the Blu-Ray. We'll see next Tuesday what the sales are for Pirates. Keep you guys posted.
Here's the article about The Lion King / Fast Five breaking records: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=7575
Here's the article about Disney releasing the statement about the later DVD release: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=6870

This really isn't a big deal. Blu-Ray's have been around for years already, they should already dominate the market and the fact that they aren't is a reflection of consumers reluctance to pick up on new technology.

Yeah. Weren't Blu-Ray's around when HD-DVD's were out and it was a battle between the two? Like DVD's, it's going to take a while before it phases out the latter via VHS.
Can you buy VHS's anymore? It's rare. I think DVD's are here to stay, but I think the shipments to each store will be less and less. Plus I'm sure studios are going to adapt to just doing a combo pack (Blu-Ray w/DVD & Digital Copy). I'd say in a few years, Blu-Rays w/DVD's are gong to be the only sales of DVD's.
If DVD's were really dying out why do studios keep insisting to include DVD's with the combo?
I think it's more of a consumer thing. If they include a DVD, people who haven't picked up on the new technology would most likely do the combo pack vs. the Blu-Ray only. It's a way of promoting and advertising. Plus DVD's are only good for on the road kinda thing. Blu-Rays are more of a home entertainment. You can't watch a Blu-Ray in a car, but you can watch a DVD. Or up at your cabin, unless you have a home theater up there haha. Like my Dad!!!

Streaming will destroy it all.

Also not surprising because Disney always releases blu-ray with DVD and a digital copy.
In fact, they now offer 4-disc combo packs (Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, live-action Alice, some of the Pixar films) that have 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Disc.

I actually think that Disney is the exception to this. People like having copies of most (or all) of the Disney library (which is obviously, extensive).

Yeah and they are getting cheaper and cheaper.
Pirates 4 which includes 3D Blu-Ray, 2D Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital Copy and a bonus disc all for $21 (with a Disney coupon) first week of release date.
That's CHEAP. Especially for a Disney movie. Usually a 3D movie for Disney is $40 or worse.
I think technology is getting cheaper and cheaper as studios get the hang of the new technology.
Yet you DVD buyers would rather waste $18 on JUST a DVD???? Vs. $21 for a 5-DIsc combo pack with the new 3D technology????
DVD's are a waste. If anything I think they should raise the price of DVD's to the Blu-Ray price to get people to switch over. DVD's are worth less than $5 in this time, imo.

I feel like people really just do not want to replace their DVD collections. How long are we going to just continue to replace movies we already own for gimmicky features? I think the public is catching onto this finally, and that's why blu-rays haven't caught on like they should have.

Disney makes the money from the whole "vault" concept. It's going for $21 in the first week (which IS cheap!), but a month after, you won't be able to find it for less than $39.99. That's the problem I'm finding with Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

Oh, I disagree completely actually. People are most likely to get the combo pack, either because they already have a blu-ray player, or because they are planning to get one eventually. Plus, certain stores (i.e. Best Buy) are offerring rebates for trading in your DVD for the Blu-ray.

Really? I wasn't aware of this. See, that actually gives me more incentive to check into blu-rays now. That's a smart move.

This is exactly why I'm not buying any damn Blu-Rays until I absolutely have to. I honestly don't want to go out and buy my whole DVD collection again just because my collection's on another platform. Not here for it. Collecting movies is a hobby of mine and I have a lot of rare ones.

That's exactly why I bought Pirates 4 this week in 3D. If I waited it out it would've been $40 and it would take YEARS before the price was below $30.
I didn't necessarily buy the movie because it was a "must-have" but I bought it because if I didn't I wouldn't have saved $20+ otherwise.
I'm still waiting for some other Disney classics to go down in price. Like the Incredibles. Haven't seen that film yet but I'm not spending $34.99 on a 2D Blu-Ray w/DVD.
Pirates 4 was cheaper with a 3D included. Not fair at all.

Like Monster said, at Best Buy they have a DVD-Trade in deal. You can bring your DVD's in and get a special discount on the same Blu-Ray title. I haven't tried it, maybe I should. I need to get Narnia 1 on Blu-Ray still, I have the DVD so I should bring that in and see what happens.

It's also a form of entertainment though. Who wants to sit through a 3 hour movie with a horrible picture and audio experience when there is a better experience??? With technology advancing watching a DVD will sound and be seen like **** compared to what the new technology has to offer.
Plus new DVD's are not going to get any cheaper. DVD makers are going to quit making DVD-drives and if you want to watch a DVD you would have to purchase a Blu-Ray player. Can you honestly LOOK for a VHS player now? It's highly rare. DVD players are going to be rare too and that's going to drive the cost of the DVD's up.
With Blu-Ray players via PS3 being made at an alarming demand, the price will always go down. Eventually people WILL convert to Blu-Ray but that doesn't mean they have to "upgrade" all their DVD's to Blu-Ray for the sake of "upgrading."

Yup! I actually just noticed it the other day. Definitely a good move on Best Buy's part.

I still don't have "Monsters Inc." and "Ratatouille" on Blu-Ray.

I bought Monsters, Inc. at the $34 price =// I read it had amazing reviews and I just couldn't resist, but unlike the Incredibles, it's not a "must have" right now. I can wait.
When Finding Nemo hit's Blu-Ray (in 3D; yes 3D) I'll be getting that first day even if it's a price tag of $40. Finding f'king Nemo in 3D on Blu-Ray.
I'll buy it no matter what. It's a Disney classic.
By the way when I see your Avatar I think of Scream. From the side sight it looks like the mask.

I'm excited for Britney Spear's first Blu-Ray release
I think maybe they are finally releasing a Britney Spears Blu-Ray to test the market. If her sales are there, they might release her past (HBO concert??) on Blu-Ray and her frickin' Crossroads movie on Blu-Ray. I'm still waiting.
*Off topic I know lol.

Kind of off-topic, but not really: I own all but three Pixar films on Blu-ray that are currently available or will very soon be available on the format: Cars, Cars 2 and The Incredibles. The first two, I do not (and likely will not) own because I'm not a big fan of that particular series. The Incredibles? Like Kevin, I don't own that because, at $35, it is WAY too expensive. If it was below $30, I would consider it, but not at $35. Like Kevin, though, I will also buy Finding Nemo the moment it comes out, regardless of the price...though I'll probably buy the 2D version.
