**** it. The countdown begins now. Mark's top 50 songs of 2005. This list is composed of all singles, except for one or two artists who do not release singles (yes, believe it or not people, you don't need singles/videos to be a success). Before we crack the top 50, however, here's a list of songs that weren't able to make the countdown...
Shoulda Woulda Coulda
These are tracks I have not even heard due to being abroad, or just recently heard, so they pretty much just got screwed and couldn't make the countdown cuz of it. A moment of silence please...
--System of a Down "Hypnotize"
--Brazilian Girls "Don't Stop"
--The Darkness "One Way Ticket"
--Straylight Run "Hands In the Sky (Big Shot)"
--Depeche Mode "Precious"
--Korn "Twisted Transistor"
--Kanye West "Heard 'Em Say"
--Eminem "When I'm Gone"
--Fiona Apple "O' Sailor"
Sooo Close
These tracks were just shy of making the countdown. If I did a top 100 like past years, these would be some of the cream of the crop. But that's just not the case, so better luck next year, fellas.
[60] Stereophonics "Dakota"
[59] Hot Hot Heat "Middle of Nowhere"
[58] The Bravery "An Honest Mistake"
[57] Dredg "Bug Eyes"
[56] The Mars Volta "The Widow"
[55] Oasis "Lyla"
[54] Snow Patrol "Chocolate"
[53] The Chemical Brothers "Galvanize"
[52] A Perfect Circle "Passive"
[51] The Faint "I Disappear"
The top 50 may have a good number of surprises to some people. Coldplay and John Legend tie for most songs on the countdown. A couple pop divas chart well. A brand new reggae sensation dominates. And one group who has been in a year-end top 5 for me since 2000 I believe, is nowhere near the top 5.
#50-46 to come sometime later.

[50] Rise Against "Swing Life Away"
...If love is a labor, I'll slave til the end
--I must say, I was not a fan of "Give It All" much at all. But this song is awesome. Great lyrics, nice vocals, and an overall catchy song.
[49] Talib Kweli f/ Mary J. Blige "Never Been In Love"
...Gave the rest a try, now give the best a try
--Quite simply, I fell in love with Talib this year. Sadly, "Never Been In Love" was his only single this year (it's one of my least favs), but it's still a great song. Talib is undoubtedly one of the most talented rappers out there today, and actually has quality lyrics with depth to his songs that add to his great skills.
[48] Jack Johnson "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing"
...Must I always be waiting on you? Must I always be playing your fool?
--As much as I loved his first two albums, I was expecting In Between Dreams to be a disappointment. Boy, was I wrong. This first single instantly got me hooked, and the rest of the album just blew me away. Jack is just one of the most chill artists to listen to. He has a higher charting song still to come.
[47] Common f/ John Mayer "Go"
...We made love and then laughter, anyway I wanted I could have her
--As much as John Mayer annoys the hell outta me now, and as much as I don't think Common can top "The Light", I still loved this song. Common, like Talib, is one of the few truly talented and untainted rappers in the game. This song is very calming, and just a great listen.
[46] Nine Inch Nails "The Hand That Feeds"
...So naive, I keep holding on to what I want to believe
--If there were any question about it, let it be known that the Nine Inch Nails are back and just about as good as ever. This song rocked the airwaves earlier this year, and it definitely was a favorite of mine in the spring and summer. NIN still have another song to come on here as well.

Lets see, AHM, Galvanize, Passive, Swing Life Away, SWW, Go and The Hand That Feeds. If this is what we've got so far, how good is the rest going to be?
And I must be one of three people on the planet to like Give It All. I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me each time I listened.

THAT I don't agree with, though. SLA is such a great song. GIA is good, but SLA has a special quality, a charm that was not matched on Siren Song. But really, I like every song on Siren Song, so it's not really that big a deal.

"Give It All" ^___^
The Faint, Depeche Mode, Korn, Straylight Run, and NIN <33333
So low, though. Seriously. I hope at least Korn and Straylight Run are higher up on your next year-end countdown.

Well, I listened to The Faint a ton this summer, but never really that song in particular. And I forgot to add them on my iPod before I left. >_<
I never heard Depeche Mode til this past week, I have yet to hear Korn or Straylight Run. Don't worry, NIN will be much higher with "Only."
I'm gonna have sooooo many songs to download when I'm back.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With "Give It All"....I don't hate it, I just don't think it's anything great.

Okay, so I decided that I'm too lazy to do quotes and comments for the remaining 45 songs. I'm just gonna start posting them.
45. Ringside - Tired of Being Sorry
44. Bodyrockers - I Like the Way
43. Coheed & Cambria - The Suffering
42. Minus the Bear - Pachuca Sunrise
41. Kanye West - Golddigger
40. The Killers - All These Things That I've Done
39. John Legend - Ordinary People
38. Hot Hot Heat - Goodnight, Goodnight
37. Madonna - Hung Up
36. Coldplay - Speed of Sound
35. Rilo Kiley - It's a Hit
34. LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk Is Playing at My House
33. The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
32. Dave Matthews Band - Dreamgirl
31. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together
30. Incubus - Make a Move
29. Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me
28. John Legend f/ Kanye West - Number One
27. Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia
26. G. Love & Special Sauce - Love
25. Weezer - Perfect Situation
24. Beck - E-Pro
23. Zion I - Bird's Eye View
22. Nas - Just a Moment
21. Gorillaz - DARE
That leaves the top 20 still to come. I'll do quotes and comments for the top 10, maybe the whole top 20. 311 and Coldplay lead the pack with two songs still to come. Artists ranging from Fischerspooner to The Game to Ben Folds also land somewhere in the top 20.
Peace.

These all were (or should've been) on my list? I love your eclectic taste!
BTW Mark, have you heard any songs by Girls Aloud or the Sugababes? I think you would like them!
