Police are looking to bring criminal charges against three or more teens following the suicide of a 14-year-old who had been bullied for being gay.
Jamey Rodemyer, who had blogged about being suicidal after classmates incessantly taunted him for being gay, was found dead outside his parents home in Williamsville, near Buffalo last weekend.
At least three teens are said to be of particular interest to police and may be charged with hate crimes, harassment or cyber-harassment following the tragic death.
Police said Thursday crimes may have been committed against Jamey while he was a student in the Williamsville school district.
The Amherst Police Department's Special Victims Unit said it will determine whether to charge some students with harassment, cyber-harassment or hate crimes, ABC News reported.
District officials said they're cooperating with the investigation. Three students in particular appear to have been involved.
Jamey had just started his freshman year at Williamsville North High. He had repeatedly cried out for help in the months before his death and his family and friends said suicide was a popular topic with him. He wrote regular posts online about being bullied at school.
But after sharing his pain on internet blogs and YouTube, students at his school started to bully him online as well as at school.
Jamey had endured harassment for years. Twelve months ago on his Formspring account - which permits anonymous posts - other students started making gay references towards him.

'JAMIE IS STUPID, GAY, FAT ANND UGLY. HE MUST DIE!' read one post.
Another read: 'I wouldn't care if you died. No one would. So just do it It would make everyone WAY more happier!'

On September 9, Jamey wrote on his Tumblr site: 'I always say how bullied I am, but no one listens. What do I have to do so people will listen to me?'
The day before he wrote: 'No one in my school cares about preventing suicide, while you're the ones calling me [gay slur] and tearing me down.'
He put up a separate post that day letting everyone know it was National Suicide Prevention Week.
But still no one listened.
Jamey is the second student at Williamsville North High School to commit suicide in the last two years.
On Saturday night he posted a lyric from Lady Gaga's song The Queen on his Facebook page which said: 'Don't forget me when I come crying to heaven's door.'
On 1.30am on Sunday morning, he left two final messages on one of his blogs saying he was looking forward to seeing his great grandmother, who recently died, and one as a tribute to Lady Gaga, thanking her.
Hours later he was dead. Police have not said how Jamey died.
His mother Tracy Rodemeyer , told Buffalo News: 'He touched so many hearts, so many people. I didn't realize how many people he touched. He was the sweetest, kindest kid you'd ever know. He would give all his heart to you before he gave any to himself.'
She said that her son had been questioning his sexuality over the last year and that his fellow students picked up on it and used it to taunt and bully him.
Friends of the 14-year-old reported the message posts to the school guidance counsellors, she said, but by then it may already have been too late.
'He was totally against bullying. He has had issues since fifth grade. He had suicidal tendencies back then,' she told Buffalo News.
Joe Chearmonte also committed suicide when he was a student at Williamsville North High School.
She said she tried to talk to him on numerous occasions and asked him to talk to her about what was wrong, but he assured her that he was OK. Last weekend the family went to a camping spot they would frequently go to and she said he seemed really happy.
Mrs Rodemeyer said: 'He used to cry about the taunts from his peers but they didn't seem to phase him this time. Lately, he's been blowing them off, or at least we thought he was.'
Olivia Rinaldo, an eighth-grader at Heim Middle School, said she was drawn to his outwardly upbeat and extroverted personality. He made friends of the friendless, she said.
'He was always putting people first. He always wanted other people to smile, even on the worst of his days.'
She said even though he was seeing a social worker and a therapist, not enough was done to help him.
A letter was sent home to students on Monday morning informing them that he was dead.
Dale Bauer, a licensed school social worker and clinical social worker at North, said: 'We make it apparent to the kids that there's help all day long and in the days to come.'
Another student at Williamsville North High School junior Joe Chearmonte, committed suicide in February 2010.

Glad to see they are working on serving JUSTICE to those bullies.
Jamey.

To be completely honest, wouldn't treating them like criminals make them even more hateful and unruly?

So what do you suggest is their punishment then?

These bullies committed hate crimes that drove a mentally unwell 14 year old teenage boy to suicide.

The source is the Daily Mail, that was just another site with an article.
AND kids deserved to be punished, especially when they're the reason behind all of this nonsense.

I mean, do they even have relational trust up in that school to even hold an assembly about this mess?

Tragic death: Jamey Rodemeyer, 14, had blogged about being suicidal after classmates incessantly taunted him for being gay
Fan: Jamey loved Lady Gaga and left a thank you to her as one of his last postings before he died

No, I'm not doubting the source, I'm just LOLing at the name.
I know they should be punished, but they are kids. I don't wanna see kids jailed for bullying. I'd rather see them counseled & therapy. And with a school that's had so many deaths, they need some to have yearly presentations about bullying, and go really indepth. But that's just my opinion.

No. My bullies were prosecuted as well and it made them change completely (or so it seemed). Though, their bullying and hate didn't stop at words and insults. They committed felonies.
I'm really glad to see that something is being done about this. It would be a ****ing shame if they got away with this with absolutely no punishment. I don't care how old they are. They should know better.

They need to be prosecuted, in my opinion. Their parents could pay hundreds of thousands of dollars on counseling and it wouldn't make much of a difference. They need to learn about the consequences of their actions firsthand. Even if they don't end up jailed (I honestly don't see them being jailed anyway; they will likely be given probation and counseling), it will scare the hell out of them, which would be ideal.

Thank God, they deserve to get charged for that.

They caused a kid to commit suicide and then proceeded to cheer his death at a dance. I don't give a damn if you're 53 or 16-17, they clearly need punishment.

Granted, these bullies as well as your bullies, said and did some horrible things but they are children.
And putting a child in a environment amongst other children and adults who have commited much more heionus acts would only make them hardened criminals.
Perhaps, therapeutic sessions with the bullies and the parents may help get to the crux of why these children are bullies.

These are teenagers, not toddlers. They're aware of their behavior.

Before a punishment is placed on them, someone needs to try and find out why these kids are being so horrible towards their fellow sudents.
You don't just come out the womb looking to ruin some other child's life. Something had to happen to these children to make them act this way.
And these bullies are only PARTIALLY to blame for Jamey's suicide. It's not all their fault.

If the children just get a slap on the wrist and therapy, they will take it like a big joke. Let's not, these are the same kids who cheered when they found out he had died. They are evil filth, and they need to be taught a lesson.
