I use okay when someone is hurt or feeling down on themselves. I will ask them "are you okay?. If someone tells me to do something, I'll just say OK.

I use "OK" when I don't care about the conversation and don't want to tell you how I really feel.
I use "okay" when I actually agree with you or am telling you about my feelings.
